how to use xming

 http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/

We are trying to connect to HPUX computers.

I have paid my monies and downloaded this. I have been unable to get xming operational.

Currently I use an OLD version of Hummingbird Exceed which gives me access via RLOGIN. I can access all the graphical tools I need and it's great.

We are eventually going to disable RLOGIN and gain access via something XMING with Putty and SSH2.

I don't need this now and can use whatever xming comes with. When you start it though, it just resides in the task tray in windows, doesn't even prompt for a server name and sits there. How can I get it to connect to one of our servers that we can currently connect to with Exceed?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is using other S/W an option for you?

It depends.  I have done some checking in another thread and found that xming may be about the only thing that can connect to the GUI's such as Ignite within HPUX.  If you are certain it will, I could use that.  I've certainly heard of it.  Do you know if it will work with HPUX?

You need to try, since I do not have an HPUX system to test it. If you are interested in commercial product, try x-win32

What does "it" mean in your last sentence?

verpitAuthor Commented:
"It" refers to the running of xming.  When you install xming, two (2) icons (xlaunch and xming) appear in the all programs, xming group.  I don't know where to take it from there to get xming opperational.  I am fairly certain that my HPUX boxes have what they need because Exceed currently does work.  I just need to figure out how to get xming to produce similar results.

xlaunch does all the connection setup like xdmcp or rlogin , xming only starts X server which you can use with e.g putty

With our HPUX server, I use 5 GUIs via an older protocals because that is all our old version of Exceed supports.  I would prefer to use putty over SSH.  So I guess the question is that with Putty over SSH, can I still access all of these GU's, and how?

Console (Integrated Lights Out - Enabled)
CDE - Common Desktop Environment
IgniteUX - Backup software for HPUX
The File Manager (name unknown) provided via CDE
SMH - System Management Homepage via Firefox

Problems with putty are rare, most common when using su. sudo usually does better.
