Why internet explorer displays only HTTPS pages

Hi Hero,

I am having a great frustration with my gateway laptop, it had Windows XP professional with SP2 and it was working find using IE7 and Firefox. One day suddenly it stop working, and I reboot the computer, then it work again, and then there is when the problem started. Since then it will never allow you to display any HTTP pages anymore, including http://www.Yahoo.com and http://www.google.com.

You can only browse HTTPS webpages, and if you click a link that is an HTTP it will come with an Error Message: "Internet Explorer cannot dispay the web page"

I tried reseting all the IE settings, I tried running a utility to re-installed the winsocks and TCP/IP, runing SFC /scannow, then afterwards, I ran SP3 and still I stuck with the same problem, can some one help? I would really and greatly appreciate yoru help on this matter ASAP.

You will be well rewarded for your effort!!! Thank you!!

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc (assuming your windows is installed on C drive) and open the hosts file with notepad. Check to be sure that the first uncommented line (i.e., without the # sign) reads
127.0.0.1           localhost. If not enter the line and save the file. and try.

Hello toalopez,

1. If you are using AVG antivirus program, go here
http://www.avg.com/faq

and search for FAQ # 1561

2)  If no joy, create a new user account in Windows and use IE7 from there.

3)  Uninstall IE7 and go back to IE6.

Hope this helps!

None of the help you guys gave me help so far, no joy :( no luck!

I still don't have a cue of what is going on. hope some one can come out with the right solution to fix this problem.
Well the last thing that I did so far is to boot from windows XP in Safe mode with networking, then I finally could use HTTP protocol to use IE7 to browse the internet, so I found out  that it was the devices hpqcxs08 and the hp devices support or another memory resident program that is controlling these service that it is making my PC extremely slow, when you click the start button it takes about 5 min to show up.

The problem now is that the DNS and DHCP is stopped, but when I try to start both of them, they will not allow me, because they say that another dependency needs to be started, when I go up the chain, I start having problems to start them up.

Can this help someone to figure out what is happening here?
I just started having the exact same problem with one of my users machines.  He just brought it too me - same deal.  HTTPS pages display fine.  HTTP pages will not.  This is not a external DNS problem, because internal web applications will not display either.

Any answers to this??
Well I think it is some kind of invisible service or process that is acting as a firewall. that only allow HTTPS and not HTTP protocols. not sure if it is a spyware or a virus, but that is all that it does so far. I tried all kind of things using netsh.exe resetting the TCP/IP stack and resetting Winsock and nothing really works, it must be something that is controlling this beahavior, not really sure!!
Its IE specific.  Firefox works fine.  Pinging external addresses works fine.  Even telnetting to port 80 on an external site works fine.

I believe I resolved the issue though.  It seems like there was a Symantec piece installed on his machine.  We use Trend, but for some reason Symantec was installed too.  I uninstalled that and it worked for a minute... then stopped... then started working again.  I tested out multiple pages for a half hour and gave it back to him.  No problems yet.
I uninstall IE7 and went back to IE6 with no joy, then I ping external address and it worked except for www.msn.com. But firefox had the same problem as well.
If both Firefox and IE6 cannot access internet, then it is a system problem.  You have tested if the problem is antivirus by disabling or uninstalling the antivirus program? Disable firewall?  Check the router?  Do you still get access to https websites?
I was having problem getting access to HTTP pages on the internet, but I didn't have no firewall installed and the firewall on the router was disconnected. Also I can have access to the internet with the other desktop computers, but not with myl aptop, I disable Norton anti-virus and the only pages I can display was the HTTPS web pages only.
