Executing SELECT statement declared as variable

I'm trying to execute a select statement as part of an email sending SP however I want to declare the select statement as a variable and then execute it when required. This works perfectly in query analyser however when dropped in to my SP, it fails on the SET @select part of the code snippet below. The error message should also appear below/attached.

The question is, if the code can work in QA how can I also make it work in my SP?
DECLARE @select varchar(1000)

SET @select = 'SELECT top 10 id, name, email FROM mytable where name = ''John'''

EXEC (@select)
