asked on

What is the purpose of msdb on MS SQL Server?

This should be a simple question for a SQL guru. . .

What exactly is the purpose of the msdb system database (master too if possible)?

The reason I ask is that I'm using some monitoring software on my SQL server and msdb is showing the highest utilization (by far) of any database.

Why would its relative utilization be higher (more than double the next) than any other database?  Is it akin to the "system idle" counter in task manager?

What type of utilization are you referring to:  Filesize, CPU, Memory?

Are you running many Jobs? sending lots of email?

Is this database slowing down your SQL Server?  If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
