xp pro hangs after logon. Task Mgr is available but no desktop

xp pro svc pack 3 recently had a trojan (zorg) removed. No trace is left, but now xp hangs after the user logon screen.

I've gone so far as to do the reinstall repair an existing xp pro installation (not the recovery console) and still it hangs after I login.

I start the task mgr and see that explorer is running in the svc's, but the desktop won't load.

On i tried the sfc scannow and it fired up all the other svc you'd normally see, but then poof, I get the NT error box that says "windows must restart because the remote procedure call terminated unexpectedly"

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I reinstall xp pro on a new partition, rename the old one and run programs from there.

ARGHHHHHH!
Windows XP

Can you login via safe mode?
Try to use system restore. and try to disbale that remote service from the control panel->administrative tools->Services

When you login normally:
On the task manager if you kill the explorer process and  go to File->New Task and type explorer and press Enter.

Have you tried running CHKDSK from the Recovery Console? That might help if disk corruption is causing the RPC service to have trouble running...

Thanks for your response, I've tried system restore for points all the way back to the middle of November and no luck.

As far as the task manager goes, the funny thing is that explorer.exe was running. I kill the process and try to file>new task> run explorer.exe and still nothing. Then a few minutes later the nt authority msg shuts me down. I boot into safe mode, and check the svc's but you can't enable the rpc svc in safe mode.

I ran task mgr file>new task>run sfc /scannow and that did its thing, but still I get the hang after the user logon screen.

I didn't use the recovery console because I don't want to destroy my installed programs (yet anyway).

I should've partitioned the drive to be os on one side and everything else on the other, oops. I'm taking a look at that option right now, but I need to back some stuff up first just in case it craters for good before I can fix it.

My next option it to again do the repair an existing installation option with the winxp disc (not the recovery console) and try to reinstall the system files without losing everything. I'll let you know.

Use the standard repair method.
YOu can connect the hard disk to another computer to extract the data you want (or by using linux live cd),

How is the Recovery Console going to destroy your installed programs?  That would happen if you do a clean XP install, but not by running Recovery Console.

I thought repair console changes all kinds of stuff in the system (unless I'm remembering things incorrectly) forcing you to reinstall stuff.

The install/repair a previous installation only changes sys files which I think is where the real problem lives.

Maybe I'm confused in this.

Do you have a link for the linux live cd that you would use maybe with a tutorial on how to do it. That seems like a good option
