XP repair now giving status.msi error

After Spybot S&D run, WIndows Xp was booting and immediately shutting down, I folllowed the advice on this post:

http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/logs-out-imedialtly-after-i-log-in/116408.html

Here's how I fixed it:

First: I used the XP CD to boot to the recovery console("R" at the first prompt). From there, I ran chkdsk /r c: to fix problems on the hard drive. There were plenty.

Second: I rebooted to the XP CD to repair the installation of Windows XP. Do not use the "R" Recovery Console this time. Instead go through as if you are going to reinstall afresh and when it detects the current installation, choose the option to repair it.

That corrected the boot and reboot problem and I was able to access my desktop/hard drive; however, the CD I used was a Windows XP SP1a, the only one I had, since the repair no restore points from before the problem are available and while I have my desktop back and can get to my programs, the error message "An installation package for the product "Status" can not be found  try the installation again using a valid package 'status.msi' continues to pop up every 30 seconds.  A review of the event log shows error with iTunes programs, AVG programs and just about everything else I have loaded - i.e. the file can't be found or can't load.

I used a post in this forum today that pointed me to http://www.tutorials-win.com/SupportXP/status-disk/ and tried uninstalling all HP driver related with this cleaner (I have those original disks), reboot and the same "status.msi" message appears - where do I go from here?
Hope this helps.  ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Couple of things:

1.  What type of computer is this?  Dell/HP?
       a.  If it is a Dell; either try and locate a Windows XP Home/Pro CD or go to www.bgtsllc.com - Contact US, fill out the form with your information, address, etc. and we will ship you a CD/DVD you can use.  Yes there is a fee and shipping.
2.  Download "Dial-A-Fix" here:  http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtml

Let me know and thanks!

The laptop is a Compaq which merged with HP. I  used an Windows XP CD to repair, what are you suggesting I do  when you say "either try and locate a Windows XP Home/Pro CD", I have one, what is the solution now?
1.  Did you download Dial-A-Fix?
2.  Download Microsoft's Uninstaller and try to remove any HP items.
3.  Go into MSCONFIG and disable what you can under startup and services.
4.  Go into the registry [regedit] under - look for the run once option and see what is loading.
5.  Have you or are you able to perform the windows updates to SP3?

1. Will run tomorrow and post results
2. Already used MS Uninstaller and removed all HP items
3. MSCONFIG goes through three levels before error appeared - will post those results tomorrow as well - was given this advice - thoughts?
"Open up your registry with regedit. Of course, be very very careful when you're
editing the registry. Search in the registry for any mention of status.msi, and delete the references to it. Reboot, and hopefully the nagging popup will be gone."
Sounds risky, isn't that just getting rid a pop-up and not really fixing the problem?
4. Ok, will post tomorrow as well
5. Can not access internet at all wireless will not load, driver issues - any ideas?
