Solar Cell

1. What are the disadvantages of a solar powered calculator?
2. Why are solar cells not widely used?
Can someone give me some information on this please.  Thanks.

Hi ToTo,

Are you saying that enough solar cells are not being manufactured is because it will slow the economy further (affecting the petroleum industry and other energy producing industries),  affecting business on a wider picture?  Is that correct?

Is there any scientific reason of why they are not being manufactured widely?  Could you comment on this please?   Thanks

Roof mounted solar "panels" only heat water, they don't produce electricity and they will pay back the installation costs in reasonable time (seeing the price of heating water with an oil burner or similar) by providing hot water for showers and such.

Solar panels (for electricity) generally are expensive and have poor efficiency (low output per area unit).

For calculators they should be perfect, unless you're inclined to do that sort of work in the dark.

Re: Rid's point:

Roof panels still save energy but not money..Articles i've read say that they will take over a 20n years to pay back...Also, that is if it works for 20 years, probably get many expensive engineer callout charges for faults in that time too.
Payback time may vary a lot depending on your situation.
It may be a lot faster or may be slower. If you are considering it, you should do your own calculation.
But in most cases, payback time for increasing your energy efficiency is significantly shorter than for installing roof panels, and it is generally better to do those things first and add photovoltaic panels after you have done all the easier things.
Solar water heaters also mentioned generally pay back faster than photovoltaic panels.

It's a good q.  I've got a solar-powered calc that's at least 20 yrs old and it works great, I love it.

Even the light in a typical office or cubical is plenty for it to work.

Yeah, disposal issues seem to tremendously favor solar calcs.  I've used it for 20 yrs and never disposed of a single battery, which can leach contaminants into the ground.

Thanks for the repsonse.
Lol, copying my comment was worth pts, but the comment itself wasn't :-) .
LOL, but that doesn't address the original question.
