Can ping router, can ping DNS server but can't access internet
Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered before, I tried searching for my answer but can't seem to find the right words to find my particular problem in the database.
I have a desktop computer with Windows XP Family plugged to a d-link router. There's also a laptop with vista plugged wirelessly to the same router. I have a cable internet connection wich is always on. The router is connected to the internet so is the laptop. The desktop computer does see that there is a connection to the internet but I can't access it via IE7 or Firefox, it always tells me "Can't find page".
I checked for IP conflict, I released the ip, flushed the dns, uninstalled IPv6 and removed a hole lot of viruses, some were hooked to netmon and DNSconnect. I can ping the router from the cmd prompt and I can also ping the DNS server of my ISP but anything beyond that point I can't ping at all. I checked my host file and cleaned it. Still I can't access the internet. Could someone help me please I really am stucked right now. I'm pretty sure it's a simple solution, but I think the holidays affected my brain a lot more than I thought :(.
Thanks in advance.

You stated that you removed viruses but did you check for spyware? I know that this will cause internet explorer to not work. Also check to see if the firewall is in lockdown mode and not allowing internet traffic.
Oh, you *had* virus infections before - then my first guess is that you are *still* infected. And if it was a whole lot of viruses, I'd even recommend to do fresh install.
Anyway: Can you ping by name, e.g. "ping https://www.experts-exchange.com" ?
If you enter (in a cmd prompt) "telnet www.expert-exchange.com 80", then hit any letter (it won't display) and enter - do you get some html text (ending in "</html>") and "host disconnected"?

hello.
Since you checked all of these and your computer was in a viral status here are my suggestions.
(i assume that ipv4, if that is what you are using, is enabled and properly configured -ip, sub, gateway, dns)
Go at control panel , internet options, connections and setup. go through the wizard and set it up for a broadband connection . does it work?
Go at control panel and create a new user with administrative priviledges. log in with that user. Can you open web pages with that user?
Please post back your results

Hi Sommex,
I suggest you get your router to issue DHCP for all your PC's and notebook.
Otherwise, if you have to use static IP, you might want to try putting in your DNS Server IP Address onto your static Network IP Address on the DNS section defined on your network properties.
As you also have malware on your PC, there might also be the cause to all your problems after all.
Simplest Solution, FORMAT the PC with clean new copy of OS will always solve most problems.
Hope this helps. :-)

A few weeks ago I had the same problem, and there was a Root Kit Virus on my computer.
The workarround for me was download F-Secure Anti Virus Evalution Version (www.f-secure.com), put it on a USB Drive or CD.
Copy and install it on the computer without internet access. Restart in Save Mode (F8 on Pre Boot)
and run F-Secure Full Computer Scan
After running and Cleaning I hope your computer is working fine again.
