I'm looking at doing a complete overhaul of my personal home media server.
Currently I have 500GB x 2 RAID1 (mirroring) setup on my main desktop machine.  However, there are a number of issues with that, since I also use the machine as my main home machine, which has its drawbacks.  No matter what, I want it to be at least RAID1 -- at least I can say I had two drives holding my data rather than one.  (and I know, yada yada yada, offsite storage, blah blah blah.  =P  )

I have a number solutions already in mind, and a few reasons that underly them -- i'm looking for your opinions/suggestions/new possibilities.

-- Another selfbuilt WinXP media server Raid1, probably 1TBx2 drives.  (work to get it made, control, updates, etc.)

-- A drobo + droboshare + whatever drives.  (very pricey for a personal home solution, mixed reviews)
i.e. http://www.drobo.com/Products/drobo.html

-- A generic 1TB x2 external raid1 drive  (cheap, suspect quality, "dumb" raid, voiding the warranty to change out a drive?, no gigabit net interface)
i.e. http://www.amazon.com/Cavalry-USB-eSATA-RAID-Disk/dp/B0014PL5EK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231035296&sr=1-1

-- A brand name external NAS drive  (more expensive, drive hotswappable, networkable)
ie. http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-301259U-Network-Attached-Storage/dp/B000VW0QP6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
(does this lacie take any drive, or only lacie?

-- Apple TimeMachine -- that wifi switch that also is a nas drive?  I haven't done much research on this one.

-- And as much as I'd like to get a RAID10 2U Dell w/ dual blah blah blah, I'm not filthy rich.  Unfortunately enough.  =)

-- insert your solutions here.

I'd like details, personal experience, suggestions.  Size, cost, reliability, etc etc.  Spit what ya got.

Thanks much.
