Task Start and Finish dates differ between the Resource Usage and Gantt Views

I have a project plan where I have observed that the start and/or finish dates are different between the Gantt view and Resource Usage view. Yes, I double and triple checked to make sure I was comparing the same tasks.

Any ideas? Do I just mis-understand how Project works or am I correct that this shouldn't happen? Is the file corrupt?

Thanks for your help.

Hello shagnea,

In general, a task's start and finish date should not change with your choice of view.  But unless someone has seen this rather odd problem before (and I haven't) we are probably going to need a bit more information to help you through the problem.

If your project is not too sensitive to do so, I will suggest that you zip it, change the zip extension to txt and add it as an attachment to this query.  You should then be as specific as possible about which task you are seeing the problem with.  Then someone can download/open your project file, take a closer look and provide you with better guidance.

Thanks for the suggestion!

The zipped project plan is attached.

One example is task ID 771. The Start date differs on the resource vs. task view.

Also ID 754 is like this.

Hello shagnea,

Ok, I have your project file.  Which views are you looking at?

I can see task 771 starting today and ending on the 15th in the Gantt chart, which resource view are you looking at?

As a side note, I generally recommend that users avoid editing the standard Microsoft provided views and tables when customizing project plans.  The preferred practice is to create a new view/table by copying and renaming the original.  For example, I might create a copy of the Gantt view and call the new view Bobs Gantt with a table called Bobs Entry.  This allow me to easily copy my customized view (via the organizer) to another project without naming conflicts.  It also allows makes it easier for other people to provide support using the standard views.

Good suggestion, I think I'll follow that in the future.

I've been using the Resource Usage view to look at the dates.

You nailed it.

I knew that MSP allowed start/finish on a task to vary by the resource, but in this (odd) case, Angela was actually a material resource (that's a long story that I'll spare you).  For whatever reason, I failed to consider the affect on Angela when I moved Tracy's tasks further out into the future.

A frustrating but instructive experience. Thank you for your nicely laid out and lucid explanation. More than worthy of full points and a hearty "Happy New Year" to you!
