Can no longer access MyBook World Edition external HD

I had connected a MyBook World Edition to my router (LinkSys WRT54G), and after much heartache was finally able to access the hard drive --- for about a week.  Suddenly, I have not been able to access the external hard drive.  I changed no settings (that I know of).  I have tried plugging the HD directly into my ethernet port on my laptop, but it does not find the HD (even trying different cables to eliminate that variable).  I have also tried it on different routers, with no success.

Chance the small circuit board failed, remove the drive off the case and connect directly to system board and try access the drive from there see if you can see the drive and its contains.

I would see if it works via USB. as mentioned the adapter may have gotten fried somehow, but the data may be intact, or the opposite, the drive may have died.

I hope this helps !

There is a USB port on it, but it is USB-A.  A few days ago I bought an A-A cable, tried to see if it might work, but the computer did not find it (quite possibly, like the guy at Fry's said, it is an out-only / expansion port for the drive).  If I had to "connect directly to the system board" -- how would I go about doing that??  I'm not one for taking this kind of thing apart.

The interesting situation is that my Norton Internet Security software finds the external hard drive, but it shows that it is "offline".  This makes me think that there is something in my network settings (or my computer settings) that does not allow the hard drive to show as "online". Could this be the problem?  I'd rather try simpler solutions than cracking open the hard drive (although I do appreciate the link, so that I can use that as a last resort option).
Thank you very much.  I have been able to get the case open, and I am working on getting a cable to connect the drive via USB... hopefully it works!
Can you ping the drive's IP?

Do the differnt routers assign an IP to the device?

Have you run a sniffer to find out the NAS in your network?

If you know the unit's shared folder name, did you try to assign directly a drive letter using Windows as in X: \\MyBook\shared or whatever the name you chose. What does Windows reply when it fails to connect?
