iPhone Backup in iTunes failing - Sync is ok

As of this morning I cannot backup my iPhone using iTunes anymore.

I am using a HP Compaq 6710b Intel centrino duo laptop with 4gb of memory and oddles of hard drive space.  Running Vista Business SP1.
Using the original white USB cable to connect the iPhone.
iPhone is a 16gb 3G one running the 2.2 software (not jailbroken)

Only changes made over the weekend was the installation of the Steam, Done Drinking and Crazy Penguin Catapault apps.
Aside from this Windows update KB915597 has been installed (just a windows defender definition update).

When I plug my iPhone into the PC it is recognised. I can copy photos from the device, synchronise all apps, calendars, email, contacts etc. (tested to ensure it works).

Whenever I try to run a backup (right click on the iPhone on the left and select backup) it runs for approximately 5 minutes, get's to about 98% complete and then fails with a windows generic application error message.

Examination of the event log shows the following:

Event 1000

Faulting application AppleMobileBackup.exe, version 8.0.445.16, time stamp 0x4914bb0a, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a727, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00009e33, process id 0x1230, application start time 0x01c96ecc710ff394.

I have tried:

      1. Checking versions of msvcrt.dll. All current
      2. System restore to a time before the patch weas installed
      3. Uninstalling apps on iPhone that were added over the weekend
      4. Different cables.

All to no avail.

I don't really want to restore it to factory and resynch as I will lose any info not backed up.

Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Apple "genius"es (their term not mine) were useless as I was synching with a Pc not a Mac. Found two forums discussing my issue but niether had resolutions :(

Your existing backup on the PC may be corrupted.   Try this:

Go into C:\Documents and Settings\user name here\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup and find your existing backup in there.  It'll be a folder with some nonsensical name.  Add BAK to the folder name, so iTunes doesn't find it.

Then, try running a backup.

If that doesn't work:

Have you tried uninstalling iTunes, downloading iTunes, and reinstalling it?  That might help if the problem is that some component in iTunes has gotten corrupted, for example.

I would also try running sfc /scannow, to make sure that your Windows system files are uncorrupted.

Thanks for the speedy response Akahan,
I located the folder indicated, renamed it and then tried a new backup. Same result although I did notice it has created a new folder and placed some files in there. Wish I had another iPhone so I could test a restore :)
Also I have already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and run the system file checker (ran it again just to make sure nothing had changed since the most recent system restore and still no integrity violations).. I even did a /verifyfile on the dll.
