SAS SAN Software and architecture?
Hi,
A)
I am new to the storage area network(san) world. I am working on a san project. I am planing to build a san for a PostgreSQL DataBase that will be used by an E-Commerce site. The OS being used on the network is Windows Server 2003, ASP.NET for the application and IIS for the http server.
I am planning on building an SAS SAN since equipment can be added as required or needed by the san network with out having to buy lincenses for the hard drives or GB used.
1) Can anyone point out an open source or free san software(utility) that will run on Windows OS and allow the managering of the san network?
B)
I am planning on using a motherboard that contains:
Slot Type Qty.
PCI-Express x8 2
PCI-X 133/100MHz 2
PCI-X 100MHz 2
I am planning on adding PCI SAS Controller Cards to support SAS HD. Each card can hold from 8-16 HD and are inexpensive from ebay. The HD can be directly connected to the DB Server using PCI Cards with internal Connectors: SFF-8484 SAS connector. This configuration will give me enought room for some time, about 40 Hard Drives.
My question is:
1) Can I daisy chain DB Server with a similar server using a PCI SAS Card that contains an External Connectors: SFF-8470 SAS connector when I need more room, hard drive, and expand this server?
2)Would I be able to manage the second server through a san software and add the room required to the DB Server?
Thanks,

1) Don't think you will be able to make one of your servers behave like a SAS target. Perhaps you should look at using iSCSI instead.

I was looking into a software called Sanmelody. From what I could understand, It allows one to have a server working as a San. It allows one to set the HBA cards serials into the software and recognize the card on the network and ... Have you heard about this software before? The only problem is that it is a little expensive.
