asked on

What virus scan is the best for server 2003 and windows xp?

What anti virus would you recommend for windows server 2003? I want something that does not consume too much system resources but still be effective.

I purchased Norton Endpoint but am considering returning it because people say it's a power hog.

Any suggestions? It would be nice if I would also install the same software on stand-alone xp system as well.

I also prefer Mcafee, the EPO Orchestrator is great for centralized Enterprise Virus Management.  There are agents that run on the machines, that can check in with EPO on regularity, created Virus / spam Repositories, and enforce the Virus behavior with Windows GPO's.

All the above seem to be power hungry programs. How about Kypersky?

Hello,
I really like the AVG network edition (on the file server you will want the file server edition).
Hardly uses any resources and will capture more viruses than Nortons.
Thanks,
Kelly W.
Kaspersky has had issue with memory leaks on Windows 2003 servers. I haven't heard much problems with it except the memory leak issue which can cause the server to crash. McAfee really isn't power hungry.

I have read lots about norton and mcafee being power hungry and experts advising not to use them if you are concerned about using power. Now I am really confused.

We have purchased norton endpoint, but I can return it that's why I have to make a decision.

How about trend microsystems?

Anti-virus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses. However, with the proliferation of other kinds of malware, antivirus software started to provide protection from other computer threats. In particular, modern antivirus software can protect from malicious browser helper objects (BHOs), browser hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious layered service providers (LSPs), dialers, fraud tools, adware and spyware. Some products also include protection from other computer threats, such as infected and malicious URLs, spam, scam and phishing attacks, online identity theft (privacy), online banking attacks, social engineering techniques, Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), botnets and DDoS attacks.
