There must be a way, this system always ran a usb board until it broke and I temperarily used the keyboard I had laying around (ps2 of course) now I can't get rid of it. Thanks for your input all the same

can you get in the bios?  try a ps/2 keyboard, or an usb one; then check what is enabled, or disabled : usb, ps/2 errors..
"USB legacy mode" (or something like that, I'm not sure how Compaq calls it), should be on. It means that the BIOS itself should check what USB devices are there, and provide support for them.
I get to the bios screen (i think) by pressing F10 and that is the system set up screen. In there there is no mention of any turn off error messages or enable disable ps2 key board
you can try removing the bios battery for a bios reset
Seems to be that I have to run the thing with a keyboard dangling out the back. Compaq themselves have no solution.
