Emails marked as read in Outlook when they hit BlackBerry

Hey all,

We've had a problem with some users BlackBerry handhelds. Basically, they're using Vodafone's online mobile redirect and it works fine apart from as soon as an email hits their BlackBerry (5-10 minutes after hitting exchange usually) it is marked as read in their exchange mailbox, whether they've read it or not.

I've been researching this for about 2 months now and all solutions I've found have come to nought. I've tried only downloading the headers, changing where they get the mail from, messing around with the webmail url, changing the time between send/receive on the BlackBerry. I've also spoken to representatives from both Vodafone and BlackBerry support and both were thoroughly unhelpful.

Anyone here able to shed some light on this situation? We're using Exchange 2003 SP2 with varying models of BlackBerry and Outlook 2003/2007. Thanks in advance.

Check their reconciliation and make sure that it is marked as "SERVER WINS"
As far as I am aware, this is by design.
The only way you get a read/unread status across both devices is by using a BES, which maintains the status.
The online systems are basically "reading" the email from the mailbox.
They are designed to be used with a POP3 system, where the read/unread status doesn't matter because it is maintained by the client. However with Exchange, the read/unread status is global, so if you mark it as read in one location it is marked as read everywhere.

You need a BES.

Thanks for the quick feedback, guys.

BES isn't an option here, its out of their budget. Also, Outlook Web Access is the current source and its worth mentioning that we installed a new server and completely upgraded their network in September/October and the BBs were working fine with the old server.

Will check the reconciliation thing but I'm sure that was one of the first things we tried with BB support.
I have never paid for BES.
If you have more than 10 users then simply ask the service provider to give it free.
If you have less than 10, the server itself is free, plus a CAL for the first device. Additional devices are then the cost of the CALs. Although I have seen some mobile phone providers give free CALs at less than 10 as well, depends on how large a customer you are.

A BES will give you full two way sync of mail, contacts and calendar, which I don't believe BIS and the other online variants will do. It also gives you internal access to your network, and the ability to manage the devices, push out applications and actually make full use of the BES.

The message is marked as read because the headers show as DOWNLOADED at the Exchange Server.  This is the cause.  More information is available at the following link.

I think we've had enough discussion about BES.  haha
One, your instinct on this should not be happening is correct, this is a problem.

Two, the link just provided has to do with exchange 2000 standard and does not fit the criteria here.

Three, BES is not the solution to your problem, unless you don't like BIS, which for a cheap alt use BPS, blackberry professional software.

Here you go:

By the way the link should be the solution to your problem, did want you to think it had something to so with BPS
Jdera..  there is NOTHING in that link that hasn't already been posted here.
Dandmantra:

As with this last post as with the ones I have seen from you before, you don't know what you are talking about, now we can add you don't know how to read, read the post again rookie.

Again, thanks for all the replies.

We tried the wireless reconciliation thing and still no luck! I'm going to do some tests with someone's account and delete and remake the main email account myself just to be sure all settings within it are correct, though I'm not expecting much to come out of this.

Damned BlackBerry, driving us mad!
jdera, cut the crap.  I've received over 30K points this month for helping people with issues (more than some, less than others).  So, apparently, I know what I'm talking about.  Now, I may have rushed and overlooked something.  OK.  It happens.  But, don't let your emotions get ahead of your ability to reason.

to add..
If it only takes one year to get seniority in this place, I don't suppose being a "rookie" is such a bad thing.
Lose the attitude.  It looks ugly on you.
Dandmantra stop already with the point totals and the snide remarks, especially the attitude comment with the upper case ridiculousness. Points don't mean anything on this board and a lot smarter people than me on this site some with more and somw with less points, but since you have not been around long enough you won't know that. I got 150k in this bb zone alone in just a little over 2 months, who cares! Please enough I am not going to debate you on this issue, just trying to help people.
Looops sorry for the sideline comedy.

Back to your issue, it sounds like it does not happen to all users. Does it happen to those same users for every email? Have you checked for those affected users whether or not they have any rules in Outlook setup? All as goofy as this sounds do they have their outlook preview pane setup and it just looks like its being read in Outlook?

If it does not happen all time, once a user reads an unaffected email on a bb device does it show up read in Outlook?
Looops how did you make out?

Hi, guys.

Sorry for no replies, kinda abandoned this for a while after the arguing.

Still no luck with any of the proposed solutions. Thought we got it with a wireless reconciliation thing but no luck. Also tried only downloading the headers of the message and still nothing.

Turns out fiddling around with settings whilst using OWA as the source fixed the issue.

Deleted the accounts and re-added them, choosing OWA as the source and tweaking the options here and there slightly got it to work. Thanks.
