Problem with FTP LIST command

I manage a FTP server (the one bundled with the Visnetic Email Server)
For no apparent reason the LIST command has started failing when used with a file spec
The client is a bespoke application and has worked fine until 2 days ago
LIST on its own works OK as does LIST * but LIST *.txt or even LIST *.* is failing with a 505 error (File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)) but there are files there and the account has full permissions.
Any suggestions as to a possible cause?

There is definitely a file (test.txt) on the server.
