asked on

The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

Hello,

Now I don't know where to go. Not that I understand all of it.

I am trying to join a Win XP Pro computer with sp. 3 on it to a 2003 domain controller.
The DC is located away and I am connected through a VPN over a CISCO router to the domain.
Actually, this computer (A) on which I am typing this question is connected to the domain. It sits on the same subnet as the other computer that has trouble connecting. Let's name it computer (B).

Computer B gets IP information from the CISCO router: 10.aaa.yy.13. It can ping the domain controller at 10.aaa.xx.30.
The domain controller 10.aaa.xx.30 can ping the workstation B at 10.aaa.yy.13 when I RDC to it.
From computer B, (the problematic one) I can ping our domain by pinging corp.domain.com no problem.

I added the workstation name to AD on the DC; however it does not have a DNS name entry in General tab.
When I tried to join the domain from computer B by using Network ID wizard, Ive got a message that the account for the computer already exists, do I want to use it. So I said.. of course! It unfortunately did not work. Ive got a message:
Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

Can someone pinch me, please?

After that, of course, if someone could point me to a solution would be great. I flew in here to add those computers to our network and am loosing the last of my har.

Thank you.

First thing to do is ping the DOMAIN by name?

Sounds like a DNS issue rather than conenctivity.

If you DC is called servername.domain.local,

try ping servername and then domain.local, they should both resolve to the 10.x.x.x address of the DC.

If if cannot resolve them, then in the Network Card properties on the Workstation, add the server IP manually to the primary DNS Server . (You may have to set dns to manual)

Thank you.
If I ping just the server name from computer B c:\ping SERVERNAME i get this result:
Pinging SERVERNAME [10.aaa.yy.30] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 64.88.75.130: (not my ip) Destination host unreachable.
If I ping SERVERNAME.corp.company.com I get:
Reply form 10.aaa.yy.30: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=127.

Mind you, I added those entries to the host file on workstation B.
I will remove it and try pinging again.
Thank you.
Please.
You need to be able to ping  corp.company.com in order for it to be successful.

I would suggest manually putting in the DNS server on the workstation to ensure it works.

I deleted as well the computer from the AD on DC and tried to join the domain through entering the DOMAINNAME to text box in Member of:
Got this error:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain DOMAINNAME:
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

On the network card of the DC I have DNS entries for the DNS server (same as DC), another DNS server wich is replicated from DC and 'outside' DNS servers.
Would this be an issue?

Thank you.
You need the DC's IP address in the DNS settings on the CLIENT PC.

It's the clients failing to view the server. There is no issue with the server.

I was pretty sure that I could ping corp.company.com before and it got a correct reply.
I am saying that becuase now I get a reply from an IP address of a demoted Win 2K DC a few months ago.
To make sure I went to another computer here and tried it.
It gave me a correct reply as you say.
Reply from 10.aaa.yy.30: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=127.

So I tried to join the other computer to the domain and got the same error.
I don't understand the question. What you mean by view the server. It is not joined the domain, yet.
It can ping it, but not view in network, I guess.

Since I've got the reply when pinging corp.company.com pointing to the old, demoted DC it made me thinking whether the CISCO expert who prepared the PIX for me made the changes on the router.
I have a printout of it, but don't understand it at all.

It seems at has both entries for the old dns and the new dns.
it reads like that:
managaement-access inside
dhcpd dns 10.aaa.xx.16
dhcpd wins 10.aaa.xx.16
dhcpd domain corp.company.com
dhcpd auto_config outside
!
dhcpd address 10.aaa.yy.10-10.aaa.yy.30 inside
dhcpd enable inside
!
Any idea what it means? Why would the ruter have the old dns value in it?
