How can I properly embed Flash using CSS or JS?

I'm building a graphics-rich web site that uses Javascript to determine the user's screen resolution. If it's width is 800 dpi or less, a CSS style sheet delivers one set of background images to the DIVs. If the resolution is greater than 800, a different CSS style sheet delivers larger graphics to the background attribute of the DIVs. (All fonts are set to ems.)

Here's the question: can I do something similar with a Flash SWF file? On one of my landing pages, I want to have a small Flash animation. But I'd also like to serve up a different Flash file based on the user's screen resolution settings. Is there a valid way to import a Flash movie via JS or CSS so that my Flash stage size can be different for different screen resolutions?

Does that make sense? Or is my whole concept of variable design based on screen resolution settings too Web 1.0? Thanks!
