What is causing Word 2003 to close unexpectedly and how can it be fixed?

Equipment summary:
DELL Optiplex 320
OS: MS-XP SP2
Microsoft Office Basic 2003

Problem: MS Word closes after a few minutes with the following error:

"Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and must close."

AppName: winword.exe      AppVer: 11.0.8237.0     AppStamp:48eff681
ModName: winword.exe      ModVer: 11.0.8237.0      ModStamp:48eff681            
fDebug: 0       Offset: 00074c04

The problem can be duplicated by attempting to close the program (before it shuts itself down).
The error is received when Word is ...saving the normal.dot then the program completes an abnormal shutdown.  
                  
Actions taken:

From Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs change ran the repair function on MS Office;
Problem persisted, Word kept shutting down; Re-ran repair function three times.   BTW, each time the repair function was completed, a message appeared that the repair was successful. 

From Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs change ran reinstall on MS Office.
Using the OEM Microsoft Office Basic 2003 disc supplied by DELL;   Reinstall failed because the file ZF561407.CAB was missing.  
Located the file at http://harrythompson.com/ZF561407.CAB.htm   
Created backup Microsoft Office Basic 2003 disc and added the missing file.  
Re-ran the reinstall program using the backup disc with the missing CAB file. .  
The reinstall completed without errors, and gave me a reinstall was successful message.  

Completed a reboot of the PC as required by the reinstall.   No problems or errors.  

Opened Word, opened a random word document.  Thinking positively.
But, Word shut down within two minutes or less.  

The next step appears to be an uninstall and reinstall.   Any other suggestions before I try that?  
(I have already backed up my outlook data files.)

This version of Office includes only Word, Outlook, and Excel.  
Outlook is not affected, except that Word is not practical as an email editor (because it repeatedly shuts down).
Excel is seldom used, but trials show that it does not seem to be affected.
Only Word continues to shut down.
