What is it called when sites have graphical pop-ups that make the site behind them transparent?

You know how some sites have ... well, they're not pop-ups exactly ... but when the site loads, it pulls a graphic up with an annoucement or advertisement, and the rest of the site is faded out?  My boss wants me to check into how to do this, and I don't even know what they're commonly called, so it's a bit hard to research. :)

Mostly I'm just asking for what it's called so I can google it.  If, however, someone gives more information on where to find out how to do it - I'll up the points.

Look up lightbox, it is a image management like you are describing, however I would say they are loading this image on page load in lightbox then you click on it and it goes away.

It's not Adobe's Spry Framework is it?

That adds quite a few little cool things like that - I think I know what you're one you're talking about.

Have a look through the samples - it's a free download anyway.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
The lightbox was close, and graphically what I was thinking of, but being able to click anywhere on the page to make it go away doesn't really fit with what my boss wants.  The Spry doesn't look close, from what I can tell so far ... thanks for the help, though!
FYI,

It's not Spry (at least not yet).  The Spry framework has very few "effect" functions at the moment...it's almost all data functions.

Spry 2 may get closer to mimicking what jquery and mootools can do.
