What does this does this expression mean ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=Average(RC[-1],RC[-2])"

I am working on a vb.net application which generates an excel spread, can anyone tell me what does this mean
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=Average(RC[-1],RC[-2])"

It means that the formula for showing data in the active cell uses the average of the previous two cells in the same row.

Do you mean to say RC(-1) is previous cell and RC(-2) is previous to RC(-1)?
