How to demote a primary domain controller

A while back ago we moved our dns server to a new machine. Everything seems to be working fine except that the machine that was running dns sometimes doesn't authenticate users. I can reboot and then it works fine but I wasn't sure if this was because we hadn't demoted this machine yet. How can I be positive that I'm ready to demote this machine? I have turned the dns server service off for about a week now and dns seems to be working fine.

Thanks for your help

You're going to want to make sure all the FSMO roles have been transferred.

Yes the FSMO roles are important as well.

I think dcpromo will transfer those too.
all of the fsmo roles have been transferred previously.
