Exchange 2003 on Hyper-V

Microsoft seems to support Exchange 2003 only on "Microsoft Virtual Server and later versions". Does this mean it is supported on Hyper-V? I haven't seen any specific information from Microsoft that it is supported on Hyper-V specifically.

Hello pacman_d,

Microsoft Support Exchange virtualised full stop, the only exception I know of is with Exchange 2007, and even then its the 64 bit OS that exchange 2007 needs to be on, thats not supported (it is supported using Microsoft Virtualization products but not VMware untill its ratified) but Exchange 2003 IS supported on either Virtual Server or Hyper V

If it matters at all, I am running exchange 2007 on hyper-v. The only suggestion I would make is to have the exchange vhd on its own harddrive array or if you can, split up databases, logs, and os VHDs onto their own VHDs on separate arrays as necessary.

Indeed  - Ive got corporates running Exchange 2k3 and 2k7 virtualised - treat your disks and volumes as you would for physical servers :)

Yes - they will support Exchange 2003 on a virtualised environment, which could be Virtual Server or Hyper-V. The only point to remember is that the actual Virtual Machine running in the Hyper-V environment must obviously be running Windows Server 2003 in order for Exchange 2003 to install.

You want to read this guide for more clarity;

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794548.aspx

It isn't about what is possible, it is about what is supported.

ASKER

That is the page I orginally saw from Microsoft. It doesn't say specifically it will work on Hyper-V as they do with Exchange 2007.

It reads:
"The hardware virtualization software is Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or any later version of Microsoft Virtual Server"

Yes. As far as I can tell there is no specific documentation that says Exchange 2003 is supported on Hyper-V, whether it works or not. Maybe Microsoft just needs to update their virtualization support page...

Well, the answer I got was that the page linked above doesn't say Exchange 2003 works on Hyper-V - so it doesn't.  I thought (and mentioned) that a phrase specifcally saying that would be nice, but don't know what if anything they will do to change it

Did you not read the big warning that comes up when you try to give a C grade?

What more could I have done besides ask Microsoft directly on your behalf?
