Blue Screen

I'm regularly getting "Blue Screen Error" since last couple of days, with no specific task in progress; it happens anytime so am unable to determine what's causing it

All i can notice is a dump is being created, before the system reboots

You need to post the dumps here for us for analysis. It should be at least 2 dumps, to compare.

It might also be helpful if you could tell what STOP error appears on your blue screen.  To turn off the auto-restart after a serious error, so that you can read off details of the error from the screen:  right click My Computer, select Properties from the context menu, click on the Advanced tab, then click Settings under Startup and Recovery, and remove the check mark next to Automatic Restart.

 the result was -

'Windows resource protection did not find any                                            integrity violations'
Qlemo:

there is only one .dmp file -
c:\Windows\Memory.dmp
it's a 411 mb file & i couldn't upload it even after renaming it to memory.txt & also compressing it
Typically it will be in c:\users\Appdata\Local\Temp\***.DMP.
no .dmp file found in that location
Maybe you can find out yourself then. Try to find STOP in the dmp file, on that line there should be some info about the cause (some numbers, and the causing driver or program). If you could cut some 100 lines before and after, that might be enough to post here.
how do i open the .dmp file; i tried opening it with notepad but didn't succeed; i get a busy cursor for a very long time then Notepad (Not Responding) message comes up
phew! it just opened in notepad after an hour or so
will locate what you asked for & post it here
Yes, Notepad is not very efficient with big files ... I don't know whether wordpad is better.

Qlemo:

sorry friend, too many STOPs, couldn't figure out which one you wanted; is it possible that i try to email the file to you?
Can you give us two or three STOP lines?

Hmm, very bad, the data is not filled out. Looks like memory corruption or buffer overruns. You don't have a line with STOP: 0x0  ?
searched for STOP: 0x0 but couldn't find it

Qlemo:

sorry friend have to leave for the day, hope we are able to find some solution tomorrow

thanks for all the effort & help
Did you try my advice of turning off the automatic restart on error, so you can read the blue screen STOP error before it flashes past too fast to see?  Once you find the STOP error, you can then go to Event Viewer, search out the error and see what information is available in the event log.  Type EVENTVWR.MSC in the Search dialog box off the Start Menu, hit Ctrl-Shift-Enter to run it as Administrator.
LeeTutor:

yes i did that but incidentally after that there's been no crash yet :)
Well, then, first see if you can find more details with this tool:

http://www.vista4beginners.com/Problem-Reports-and-Solutions
LeeTutor:

no new solutions found

But did you click on the link in the left pane for View Problem History, and then at least find an entry for the latest time your blue screen occurred?
yes i did & the only entry there is for a problem 6 months old, nothing related to the current problem
I guess you have memory problems. I would start with that, e.g. with the memory tester startet from boot menu, or with MemTest86+ (www.memtest.org).
Qlemo:

have downloaded as suggested but couldn't find any directions for usage
free and the one I use it's very simple includes manual

Hi amit,

I would suggest you to check your cable connecting your modem to your PC.  Faulty wires causes blue screens.  I had this problem with my new Dell PC couple of months back.  After changing the cable my problem got solved.  I never got the bluescreen since then.
hi friends

pl see if the attached jpg would help

Have you run the Vista memory diagnostic tool?   This web page gives a little description of the BAD_POOL_CALLER STOP code:

http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

quote:

0x000000C2: BAD_POOL_CALLER
(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.
0x000000C2 {KB 265879} Win 2000, Win XP
0x000000C2: BAD_POOL_CALLER {KB 310527} Win XP (upgrading Compaq Professional Workstation AP550 from Win 2000 to XP)
Computer with ATI RAGE FURY MAXX Video Adapter Stops Responding After Upgrade to Win XP {KB 307151} Win XP

Go to the actual page to be able to click on the embedded links to Microsoft articles.  You might consider disabling devices to see if the error goes away, in case it's a bad driver.  And you can use the Microsoft Configuration Tool to debug other startup programs.    In Windows 98/ME/XP/Vista, you can choose which programs are run at startup by using the Microsoft Configuration utility:  click on the Start button, choose Run, type in MSCONFIG (doesn't need to be all capitals), click OK.  Choose the Startup tab, deselect programs to run at startup by removing the check mark.  In Windows 9x/ME, you may need to disable just about everything except Explorer, ScanRegistry and SysTray.  In Windows XP/Vista, just click on the button for Disable All. Reboot and see if the problem goes away.  If it does then re-enable the startup programs one (or a few) at a time, reboot, and when the problem occurs again, there is your culprit.  If you have a great number of apps to narrow down on in trying to track down the culprit, do it instead by dividing up the loading programs into successively smaller halves:  disable half of them; if the problem doesn't go away, then the offending app is within the other half, so divide that group into half; or if the problem does go away, then the disabled group contains the offender, so again narrow down by dividing in half.

In Windows XP/Vista: If the problem continues to come up with all startup programs disabled, then it is probably a driver or service.  You can click on the Services tab in MSCONFIG, click on the button for Hide All Microsoft Services, leaving only third-party services displayed, then try turning them off in the same way you did for startup programs.  Finally, if third-party services are eliminated from being the cause of the problem, you could try narrowing down on Microsoft services in the same way.

Here is a Microsoft article about troubleshooting STOP 0x0C2 messages;  it's for Win2000, but it is relevant for XP and Vista, too, I imagine:

How to Debug "Stop 0xC2" or "Stop 0x000000C2" Error Messages

i ran the Vista memory diagnostic tool & it didn't find any errors

the troubleshooting info on the "Stop 0xC2" is too technical for me to follow or attempt  anything

have downloaded & installed the memtest you suggested but haven't run it, apparently it requires for the machine to be left unused for very long periods; will probably have to get around to it if something else doesn't work :)

though the Vista memory diagnostic tool didn't find any errors

tppramod:

my machine is on LAN & doesn't have a modem attached
LeeTutor:

guess will have to get around to it sooner or later, it sounds very backbreaking though :)

a few days ago I did check for malware using QuickHeal Total Security Malware Tool; i did it again just now &  it found something called 'ffdshow'

any idea what's this & what should be done with it?
Merete:

the event viewer is so vast, i couldn't make head or tail of what to look for :)

any guidance available?
is there some way one could check if any IRQ problems/conflicts are present in the system

i ask this because one of the crash screens mentions something like -
driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal

also on the same screen is mention of NETIO.sys

on the www.petri.co.il site i found a link for Driver Detective, would you say it's worth investing in?
Merete:

unable to open

yes friend i will surely disconnect the hardwares as you suggested but unfortunately none i can think of as un-necessary
DMP Printer
InkJet
Laser
3 USB HDD
External Sound Card
ok try the main page I just took them from here scroll down to those images please
http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm
Un-neccesary to running windows that is, it will determin if one of them is a problem.
on the last you offered
DMP Printer< unnecessary
InkJet< unnecessary
Laser< unnecessary. but what's this one?
3 USB HDD<<definately look into that,  that's very interesting, could be one of these causing the BSOD,
External Sound Card, that's interesting too. Have you disabled the onboard sound card if you have one?
interesting you have an External Sound Card
have you looked in the device manager to see any problem devices with USB?
You maybe over loading your system's power supply unit

indeed I would  be suspect about those 3 USB drives
if you look at your log the one I pulled out
* A driver is mapping physical memory %p->%p
* that it does not own.  This can cause internal CPU corruption.
* A checked build will stop in the kernel debugger
* so this problem can be fully debugged.
Look at the amount of devices you have running that are USB
DMP Printer
InkJet
Laser
3 USB HDD
External Sound Card

Going through event viewer, after that will start on the hardwares

looking at the fact that there seems to be a driver problem on the www.petri.co.il site i found a link for Driver Detective, would you say it's worth investing in?
ok, have disconnected one right away; will just check my important stuff on the others & proceed

by the way if it is what you feel, overload on USB, any workaround for safely using the same no of USB devices because i don't think i can fully function without them
line from event viewer, know anything about this, the time stamp is very close to one of the crashes -
Unloading the performance counter strings for service WmiApRpl (WmiApRpl) failed
I need the id numbers to reference the actual association but I found one here at EE.

I would l look at your system the manufacture specs how much watts your PSU currently has and the specs on the USB drives,
Are they connected to the PSU on your computer or outside?
or try this
Power Supply Calculator

another one around the same time -
The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when process Performance extension counter provider. The BaseIndex value from the Performance registry is the first DWORD in the Data section, LastCounter value is the second DWORD in the Data section, and LastHelp value is the third DWORD in the Data section.
would this help?

had disconnected all the printers/sound card/all but one HDD & had another crash, message was PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

now have disconnected that HDD also for the day

Merete:

no crash in the last day or so, now attached one HDD & been working for 5-6 hrs; any suggestions how long should i wait before attaching another hardware?

have attached back most of the devices one by one, looks like the Driver Detective suggested updates have done their job
Hello AMITKHER, so are you saying  driver updates fixed it?
Good job.
Regards Merete

hi Merete, that's what it looks like, but would probably wait for another day or two before taking that as final as still haven't attached all devices, though all the 3 HDD & 2 printers are back on their job;  pending is the 3rd printer & sound card; should know by tomorrow or day after; will keep you posted here

hi Merete

i have no idea why but after working perfectly ok for so many days the system crashed again earlier today; no additional hardware/software has been installed & no other changes made to system
