Where can I find the actual code that runs the string functions?

Hi,
I want to use the string functions such as strcpy, strcmp and strcat, but can't make use of the string.h library, for various reasons. So, I want to define the functions myself in my .c file. Although I searched google, I'm having difficulty finding the appropriate code.

Any ideas?

You could get an idea from an open source compiler like gcc.

Why is it that you can't use <string.h> ?
