cannot determine IP information for wifi0

I recently installed Centos 5.2 on HP dv9000 laptop with atheros 5007 wifi card.
All seemed well with the driver but it will not determine IP information - the router is westell about 5 feet away.

As you can see from the code it seems to be working,  I am trying to hook up to "dinger" - but it won't.

nothing in dmsg

Beats me,

Thanks

iwlist and iwconfig are not about IP

ifconfig will show you that
the 'ip' command is very handy aswell

Sofar your wifi0 interface has no IP assigned.
You can configure it manually:
 ifconfig wifi0 <ip_adress> netmask <netmask>

or try to acquire an adress by dhcp:
 dhclient -d wifi0

The output means that you didn't get any DHCP replyes.

Of course that just could mean that there is not DHCP servers on the wlan youre trying to connect to.

However, did you setup the wifi connection in first place?

If not, you need to.

In your earlier post I can see that there is 2 access points visible where you are:

"4042" and "dinger"
4042 is protected by encryption while dinger is not.

I don't know which one you intent to use, or may be the acees point you aim at is not visible there.

But odds are that it is dinger since it has a string signal, so the router broadcasting it should be near you.

If my guess is correct the try the following:
 iwconfig wifi0 essid dinger
the issue
 iwconfig wifi0
in order to check that the access point 00:12:0E:44:BD:4E is properly aquired and then
 dhclient -d eth0

Otherwise you may need to setup encryption and we have two possibilities here
- The access point is configured to use WEP (BTW that would be BAD since WEP can be cracked in minutes nowadays): iwconfig wifi0 essid <your essid>  key <your key>
- The access point is configured to use WPA : then you need to install and configure wpa_supplicant in order to use it.

may be you also have an issue with the accesspoint too.

meantime I wonder why I do keep talking about wifi0 while your main wlan  interface is called ath0, my mistake.

Try all commands above with ath0 instead of wifi0 please

after issuing "iwconfig ath0 essid dinger" plz issue "iwconfig ath0" in order to make sure that your wifi card is attached to the access-point

The "Access Point: Not-Associated  " means that your card was not able to establish a connexion to the AP.
Does something interesting appears in 'dmesg' command output after you issue
"iwconfig ath0 essid dinger" ?

Another thing,

when I go to system-config-network  it is seen as wifi0 - no ath0 - I was wondering if that might have a bearing.

I keep thinking that the router might be out.  I had it working on ubuntu on this box and it worked.  Then it failed and I could not connect (but this disconnection had happened before.) Pissed, I decided to switch to CentOS so I could use this box to test my server.

Just trying to help those helping me.

may be the relevant message in dmesg output does not contain the "ath0" string.
Just look a last 10 strings or so for suspect messages.

If your router was down you wouldn't see the "dinger" access point as output of iwlist.

OHOT You definitively have an issue with your driver:
"ieee80211_unref_node: NULL ieee80211_node *" is actually a severe error message.
some thing is wrong with your 802.11(wifi) stack.

Try to uptdate your kernel and reinstall the driver.

Exactly how would I do this -  I am considering a fresh install as I am having major graphics problems with the nvidia 7150 card.  When I go to run level 3 the screen dances and I am unable to do anything.  No text can be entered and I have to force a reboot.

Thanks - your suggestions are needed.

ok hugetoon- we have a virgin CentOS 5.2 installation to work with.  Things are looking better as I can go to run level 3 and it works.... but I need to install the nvidia driver for their 7150 card.  So I am going to end this and start a new one.
