Disable McAfee temp files to c:\windows\temp

Hello,
Our virusScan Enterprise 7.0 creates .dat files (clean.dat, names, dat and scan.dat) under the
c:\Windows\temp\***(random number) directory.  Is there a way to configure it so that it stops
adding these files? Each folder is about 60 MBs.

Thanks,

Hi,

These files are the way that VSE 7 updates itself.  They are DAT files i.e. detection signatures

Also, you are on a very old version, any reason for not upgrading to 8.5 ?

Thanks

ASKER

legalsrl,
Thanks for the clarification.  We are in the process of upgrading to 8.5.  I assume 8.5 also keep an archive of it update files in the c:\windows\temp directory. Wish we didnt have to write a script to expunge these update files, to free up disk space.

Thanks

legalsrl, you are a  genius.  Would you have any Mcafee article that shows this?

Not to hand, but if you go to c:\program file\common files\mcafee\ and then look for the dat files, you'll find there aren't any

Cheers

Anti-virus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses. However, with the proliferation of other kinds of malware, antivirus software started to provide protection from other computer threats. In particular, modern antivirus software can protect from malicious browser helper objects (BHOs), browser hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious layered service providers (LSPs), dialers, fraud tools, adware and spyware. Some products also include protection from other computer threats, such as infected and malicious URLs, spam, scam and phishing attacks, online identity theft (privacy), online banking attacks, social engineering techniques, Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), botnets and DDoS attacks.
