unable to open a .xlsx or .docx file from an iis website

I'm hosting out a directory of word and excel files using IIS and I'm able to open all the .doc and xls files but I can't open any of the new .xlsx or docx files that are in there.  It seems to me it may actually be a browser issue becasue that is how I'm accessing the files and when I click on the .xlsx files I get a page can't be found when I know it is in that directory and working.

You need to add mime-types to IIS for MS Office 2007 Documents by the sound of it.
You could do it for the individual extensions you want using the below steps:
  1. Get to the Internet Management snap-in
  2. Right click Web Sites and select Properties
  3. Select HTTP Headers
  4. Select Mime Types
  5. Enter a new extension and the appropriate mime type.
  6. Repeat as needed for each extension.
Alternativly you can stop IIS and edit the metabase XML file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\MetaBase.xml) using a text editor. Search for the <IIsMimeMap Location="/LM/MimeMap" ⬦> element and append the attached lines to the MimeMap attribute.
Hope this helps!
