Exchange 2003

Hey

Can someone give me some reasons as to why the Queue in Exchange might build up and how to troubleshoot it plz?

I had a client on the phone complaining that there mail was not working. After checking it seems the mail was been recieved fine. It was for the most part leaving the domain to, all except for three emails that were stuck in the queue. I tried to force the connection, but had no joy..

How might I go about troubleshooting this little problem if and when it happens in the future?

Thx
Exchange

I did start to type a massive post, then realised that no point re-inventing the wheel;

should help you understand Mailflow troubleshooting and the ESM queue viewer.

Are you using Smart host to route out or DNS?

I.e. can you see queues for every domain you are sending to? If so just righ click and You have the option to drp the mail (with or without a NDR)

Im using DNS to deliver.. I figured out how to delete the messages now.  For the most part, it's working fine, except for the odd domain. Ive just looked to see if the IP has been blacklisted and have found that it's on Spamhaus's PBL list, but after reading up on it, it seems that it's nothing to worry about and does not explain what is going on.

What would you advise doing about the PBL? should I remove it?

Im on the phone as we speak to sort the DNS thing out.. The only domains I cant reach are  googlemail.com and yahoo.co.uk..

Sorted.. I'm now using an external smart host that my ISP is running to route email. I dont really understand how that has fixed it but...........

Because the external smarthost wont be blacklisted, and will have reverse DNS configured ;)

DNS sending always generates more work for you to do, smart-hosts are the way to go if you ask me :)

Thanks for your help buddy. The PBL is not a blacklist from what I have read. Your thought on what to do with that would be much appreciated.
