Hi,

1. Could he ever connect fine before?
2. Does he connect through a router?

On a command prompt:

3. What's the output of:
ipconfig /all

4. Have you already tried:
ipconfig /flushdns
and:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
make sure that the ipv6 unchecked incase it was there

Is there a working DHCP server avaialble?  How are you connecting?  USB or ethernet?

If you are using a router, check the router config and make sure that DHCP is available and running.  Most ISP's are providing routers nowdays.  Are there other computer connected to this network that work ok?

If the computer is getting an IP address of 169.254.xxx.xxx then it is most likley not getting an address from a DHCP server.

Try re-installing the drivers for the network card.  If that does not work try a new network card.

Hopefully one of these tips will work, if not provide some more details.
Please can you post the results of
ipconfig /all
winsockxpfix is only used when you can not connect to internet at all (example after a adware-removal)

Other basic checks you can do:
1)run "ipconfig /all" to determine status on all your network
Look for "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection
Check if any DHCP-server exists (if it does, try to ping it "ping <ip-address>" )
Check if you have a default gateway (if it does, try to ping it "ping <ip-address>" )

If you do not get any such information at all check the "Media state". If it says "media disconnected" then your wireless network is not turned on at all

2)If you have a DHCP server up and responding to pings (see above), then check that your wireless access point (AP) has the ability to give you an ip-address and that you can ping that address. If it is your own access point, then use a web browser to configure it. The address you put in your web browser is usually the one you find as "default gateway" above.

3)All wireless network cards have own software and utilities to connect with. Some cheaper versions of cards have such bad software that my recommendation here is then to try uninstalling all software that came with the wireless card, and just install the driver. After that windows itself often manages wireless connections rather well.

These tools is what I can give you if because it seems you run XP
But things you can do depends on what operating system you have, and which wireless card you have.

Hi,

This computer (dell desktop) is in a small office with other computers.  We are using a dsl router and its worked fine for many years.  Ive hooked up my laptop (wired) and ti works fine so the problem is isolated to this machine.  I even hooked up a wireless adapter to try to connect with the neighbors unsecure network and it still cant renew ip.
Im pretty knowledgeable with comps but totally blind with networking stuff.
I dont know what the ipv6 is.  Where do I check if its unchecked?

ipconfig /all flashes for a split sec and goes away.  Not enough time to see results
open the command prompt and type ipconfig /all there
send us the results

Houssam,

I did the ipconfig /all yesturday and it worked fine but today its not even staying on the screen.. Just flickers and shuts off..  What the *** is going on here!
Do you have any VPN software's installed on the problem machine, like Nortel Contivity VPN or Cisco? if so you might face problems due to conflicts between the adapters.

On in that matter any software which installs Virtual Network adapters.

Un-install the software and reboot the machine, when you get the IP, then install the software back.

No, nothing has been installed except for the linksys wireless adapter I just installed this morning.
This problem started 4 days ago
can you restore your computer back to more than 4 days?
Avatar of vin7102

Well that was my first thought when they called and told me the problem they were having. I thought quick fix-system restore, no problem..
well they had the restore feature turned off so there were no checkpoints available
... Please can you post the results of
ipconfig /all
....
Have you tried issuing the commands I gave under point #4 above?
type cmd ath the RUN command, then
IPCONFIG /all >file.txt

then paste the contents of file.txt here please.

Hello,
The IPCONIFG command will flash quickly.  Just go to a command prompt, then type IPCONFIG /all and the information will stay up on the screen.
Is the IP address the same as the new wireless access point?
From the DOS prompt can you ping yourself?
Thanks,
Kelly W.

Hi Kelly,

got it but how can I copy this, right click wont give me the option to do so

What parts of the config report do you want to know
To copy the information click in the upper left corner of the window. Go to Edit, and Mark. Select the text you want to copy and hit enter. This will load it into memory. Than you can paste it to notepad or directly here in the post.

Also as mentioned by KCTS a few posts back. If you run IPCONFIG /all >file.txt it will direct the output of the ipconfig command directly to a text file called file.txt.

Hello,
The IP address shows that there is no longer a connection between the computer and the network.
Is the cable bad?
Has the card been accidentally disabled?
I would make sure that you have a firm connection from the network card to the switch/router/hub that it is connected to?
Also, it is very possible that both the DHCP server is no longer handing out IP addresses.
Thanks,
Kelly W.
Just to clarify. Which port is that Ethernet cable plugged into? I notice that you have 2 Ethernet adapters on the machine. One shows media disconnected, and the other seems to have link but not getting an IP. Is the Intel Pro/100 the port that you are troubleshooting?

Hello,
What happens if you type in the command prompt:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Thanks,

The small lock on the icon is OK. That just means that the Windows firewall is enabled on the interface.

Then click on the OK buttons until done.

You said that you plug your laptop in and it works fine. Is you laptops using DHCP to get an address, or is it statically assigned?
First, the reason for the ipconfig flashing then disappearing was because you needed to enter "cmd" in the RUN box NOT "ipconfig/all".  Try it & you'll see what I mean...

Secondly, you are showing 2 ethernet adapters Intel(R) PRO/100 VE & Realtek RTL8139 - not sure sure why 2 NICs on a workstation??  If you can determine which one of the 2 adapter is real a/o works, (right/click) disable the other adapter. This will illiminate some of the confusion and allow you to keep more hair follicles..
Also, pls note - your wireless adapter is NOT listed in the config/all...

Ok.. now movin' on to the real issue - your IP is 169.254... In short the Intel NIC does not see a/o will not connection to a DHCP server... Why??

Bad router
- is there a different (ethernet) PC that is working which is connected to the same router or switch?
- is there a corresponding ethernet or LAN ON on the router?
if so, is LED steady or blinking green/amber?
- did you try connecting the ethernet cable to an alternate port on the router?
- did you power cycle the router?
- if applicable, did you RESET the router?

Bad cable
- did you unplug the cable at the PC and verify the LAN/Ethernet light is OFF on the router?
- did you try & replace the ethernet cable with a known good cable?

Bad NIC
- goto DOS (Start > run > "cmd" > OK) & enter
ncpa.cpl
- does ANY of the wired or wireless NICs have a Red X, or a Yellow "?" or "!" on the icon? If so, wIth the exception of a RedX the wireless nic, this is the source of your problem **
ipconfig/release - should get 0.0.0.0 address - if not, post the error...
ipconfig/renew - should get valid IP (e.g., 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, etc) - if not, post the error...
if all from above (Bad NIC) is good - repost results from ipconfig/all
devmgmt.msc - post all your adapter info listed in the "network adapter" folder AND (if applicable) anything listed under the "other devices" folder....  P2E

Hi Kelly,

First of all ,  All the connections listed on the page (even the old dial up one) has a little yellow lock on it

I unchecked Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 and still no connection.. Is that what you meant by IPv6?
Hmm, did I mention there is also test on Friday??    ;)
Hello,
Yes that is what I meant.
As stated previously does your portable have a static IP address in it?
Take the same options that I listed above but instead, highlight IPv4 and then click on properties.  Are there IP addresses listed there or is the radio button of Obtain IP address automatically selected?
Thanks,
Kelly W.
If your "Intel(R) PRO/100" has worked and is still working when using it in normal LAN, then it seems that you have to give focus to the other side of this link.

Try writing "arp -a" to check if there is any physical connections at all after trying to renew
Or try to enter the DSL-config screen to check if there is any limitations on giving out ip-addresses... for example a maximum limit..

Or just tell us more about this dsl-router.. maybe it has only 10mbit working on the link.. and this troublesome computer maybe is trying to start communication on 100mbit
(in network settings for your "local area connection" there is a configure-button for your network card (your "intel pro/100"). Inside that you have an "advanced-option". And in that list you get of properties change link "speed and duplex")
The 169.254.x.x address indicates that your machine is attempting to get an address via DHCP but is failing - check that your router does not have MAC filtering enabled that is preventing the machine obtaining an IP.

ok got the cmd thing down and will post the new report at the end here.

2nd, I just disabled the realtek so that shouldnt be a problem now

3rd, I unplugged the wireless g adapter so I could put my flash drive into that port.. just never put it back in while running the ipconfig/all command.

4th, I used the same modem, cable on this laptop and it works fine and it workes on the other wired computers in this room

Hello,
A yellow exclamation point on the card means that a driver is messed up or something along those lines.
If this is in device manager look into the properties of the card and see if it says that it is operating correctly or not.

Good job with the responses Vin & you are exempt from the test!  Your problem is the "!" on the adapter.. I would goto device mgr and remove/uninstall the adapter and see if Windoze (PnP)  is able to properly reinstall the NIC driver...
If Windows is not successful, an analog unit (you) will need to reinstall the driver manually with the assistance of either the orig driver CD (via update driver in devmgr) or call the OEM (eg Dell, HP, etc) for assistance..
Once you rid of the "!" on the ethernet adapter, you should pull a valid IP and get online...  Then you can move closer to the dentist's chair and proceed with getting the wireless working..

Ok, Im not sure if this means anything but I hooked up a wireless router to my modem and hooked up a wireless (USB) adapter to the computer and still cant renew ip address.

Im not using the internal network card at all and it still wont get an ip.. Does this tell you anything

I will try to uninstall the network adapter now.
Its almost windows is missing files to allow any connection to the internet all togeter
I have seen a similar case where on the surface nothing seems wrong , but the only way to solve this was to uninstall the NIC from Device manager while logged in as administrator in Safe mode
restart the machine in normal mode , let windows install the driver & reboot once again to normal mode
@ the command window, enter
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (should be no output of error)
netsh winsock reset (should ask you to restart your PC... pls restart)

Any history on this PC, like current or past issues with virus, spyware or malware? Is/was there a P2P app installed?  Has there always been a current security suite installed on the system?  Has there been any new software or system been restored recently?   Is this a desktop or laptop?
Are you even able to ping the localhost at 127.0.0.1? If not this could be an instance of you TCP/IP protocols being corrupted. Here are a set of instructions from Microsoft on resetting the TCP/IP stack.

Have you got MAC filtering enabled on the router ?
If you are only permitting communication with designated MAC addresses this could be the cause ofthe problem.
