Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [hdsk]

I have Dell Dimension 8300, It showing message: Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [hdsk], everytime I turn on. I tried reseat memory, video card, power cable, hdd cable, even booting without hdd, still same alert. Please help. Thank you very much.

I tried to boot without the hdd, new hdd still same problem. I contacted Dell tech support, they told me to insert the windows xp and using command chkdsk /r. it still does not work. please help. Thank you

Thank you for your help. I removed the CMOS battery, after that re_enter date, tine, etc.. it still same problem. Dell tech told me it software problem, but it new installation. I don't know why. Please help. Anthony 18
Is this still under warranty?
It sounds like you have a IDE controller that went bad or a corrupt bios.

Just to be clear though, it still give that message with all hard drives and CD/DVD drives disconnected?
do you see the disk (old and new) in the bios?
try another cable, and post disk model and ide or sata
Thank you for both of you tried to help me. the unit has attend warranty, but it has alot of personal informations in there.
The only thing I don't understand, if the HDD failed, why it still problem with the new one. unit using SATA controller and I also replaced the cable. BIOS cleared. Last thing is motherboard. do you think?.

Yes, I can see the hdd from bios. it using sata cable

I re-installed os XP for 3 times (old hdd) and 2 times (new hdd) it working fine, it happened when I restart the unit, or turned off and turned on again.
Please help

un my first post i asked you to test the disk -  did you ? and what was the result ?

Ran diagnostics HDD passed all. Thanks for both of you tried to help me. I believe motherboard failed, because Dell tech told me to look on the back of diagnostic Light and nothing light is on, intermittently power on/off.
