MAC frozen with spinning wheel

tec1912 used Ask the Experts™
Have a MAC running OS x and the spinning wheel of death sitting in the Force Quit window. Mouse is still moving but not able to open anything else? How do you do a hard reset and find out why this is happening? (seems to happen more often)

what model of Mac?
You should be able to hold down the power button for several seconds and the Mac should go off.  FIrst thing I would do is to look at console logs to see if there is anything showing in them.  You can access the logs from Finder->Applications->Utilities.->Console.

Also, when this happens is it one particular app or something particular that you are doing.  Also would help to know what OS you are running and as ozo asks what Mac.
Do a cold boot while holding down the shift key to force a safe boot and repair the hard drive.
