ArcServe 9 - Netware to Windows Backup

Hi Experts

I have a customer that is having numerous problems running their tape drive and scsi card on a Netware 6 server.
After weeks of getting IBM to help with this, the problem is not resolved and the customer is getting annoyed with all the downtime involved and regular visits.

I have an idea to get this resolved.
We know the tape drive works in windows with no problems.
The site has a Netware Server and a 2k3 server on the same network. ArcServe 9.01 running on the Netware server and NTbackup running on the 2k3 server.

Considering the above, is there a way to run a Netware Agent on the Netware server and have it backup to a device on the W2K3 with a version of ArcServe installed?

Yes, you can install any version of ARCserve on Windows and backup a Netware system. After installation, once you are in the backup window, you will see the option to discover or add the ARCserve Agents which are installed on Netware Box. Once you expand those, you will see all the Netware volumes to backup.

As ashwin_kum& correctly said,  all versions of ARCserve for Windows support agent for Netware OS.

check out the 'compatibility matrices' on this page to verify if your version of netware is supported:

you may also find useful documentation, articles on this page.

Thanks,

I actually got around to installing ArcServe 11.1 with a Netware agent.
I have selected all volumes to be backed up.
It appears like a complete backup is taken, however the job is reported as 'incomplete'.

All volumes were backed up without files skipped, besides the TREE itself, where 4 files are skipped.

If files are skipped, does ArcServe report this as an 'incomplete' backup. Also, is there a way I can backup these files that are being skipped?

Thanks for your help so far.

yes, when the files are skipped, the job status shows as incomplete. We need to know what these files are and the reason why they are getting skipped. Can you paste the error message here?

Hmm, checking the log, it does not appear to be part of the tree that is getting skipped as initially thought:

Information        09/02/2009 19:01:34 3        1        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00004.TMP
Information        09/02/2009 19:01:34 3        1        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00003.TMP

Information        09/02/2009 19:01:34 3        1        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00001.TMP

Are these simple temp files that I should exclude from the backup in order to get a successful backup?

ashwin_kumar525Commented:
As those are temp files, you may not need to backup them up. Yes, it would be fine if you can exclude those from the backup.

Hi,

Ran a test for the same folder on which you are getting the skipped file errors and below are my findings

1.All the files located under the folder sys:\system\cslib\logs are the log files which are created recursively by the netware operating system.

2. If the backup is performed for the disaster recovery purpose then you cannot skip these files from backup because they are the supporting files for the logs generated under the folder sys;\system\cslib\logs\ATLOGS where you find files with the extension .ARC

3. You can see the see hundreds of information message saying that the file is skipped but still the backup should show as completed sucessfully.

4.The skip file errors shows as 'Information' and not error, the backup job will show incomplete only when you get an error message, the backup will show as sucessfull even if you see Warning Messages.

5.Below is the log file for the test i ran for the same folder.

What you need to do?
Add the lines below in the asconfig.ini file located under sys:\arcserve\   (on the backup server)

[NetWare Backup/Restore]
UseMultipleReadThreads=FALSE
PerformanceNonNakoma=TRUE
DisableSSIBackup=TRUE

After adding the above lines, save the file unload and reload arcserve by doing a 'astop' then 'astart'

Hope this should resolve your issue. If not then paste the complete activity log for the backup operation.

Cheers................

During this copy/paste, i noticed an issue with the license for this server that I will resolve tomorrow morning. Could this be the reason why it is showing as incomplete?

the license error looks like the only error/warning from this log.

I'm looking at the console, from the windows installation.

Clicked on Help, About, Licensing.
In this list, I have 2 licenses installed it seems.

BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1 Client Agent for Netware - Licensed
BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1 for Windows - Licensed

When I select it, it shows me the key I used and shows 'Registered' as No for both of them. Is this correct?

as per the error 'Usage limitation exceeded'
how many licenses do you have for the Netware agent? 1 or more?

itprotocallCommented:
u may want to contact CA licensing support to look at this:

I have just the one license for the Netware Agent.
When it says Registered, yes or no. Does that mean it needs to go online to process the registration?
0

itprotocallCommented:
no need for registration, if it says Licensed that is sufficient.

the error you are getting is because you have 1 license key but backing up 2 netware servers.

itprotocallCommented:
you are correct in saying registration needs to go online to process.
that is meant for registering your details, along with product details with CA... probably to recieve newsletters, etc.

but this is not required for product functioning.

Ah hi,

Sorry, I have 2 licenses. One for Windows and one for the Netware Agent.
The main front-end lives on the Windows server and the agent backs up the Netware server to a disk on the Windows server.

as per the log i see two netware sources being backed up
Server_M
Server_Tree

one more thing just noticed:
Information        23/02/2009 23:08:07 27       5        Total # missed files: 4
Information        23/02/2009 23:07:05 27       5        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00004.TMP
Information        23/02/2009 23:07:05 27       5        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00003.TMP
Information        23/02/2009 23:07:05 27       5        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00002.TMP
Information        23/02/2009 23:07:05 27       5        Skip open file SYS:\SYSTEM\CSLIB\LOGS\SMLOGS\_T-00001.TMP

This is also a cause for 'incomplete' job.

Also please confirm me whether the Server_Tree is the netware tree ie its a part of Server_M or its a complete different server.
