Hi,
If i receive a template in Word or XML or any other format, is it possible to translate that into a .rpt file using crystal reports. I do not want to manually make the changes to teh .rpt file as it might not turn out accurate.

I am afraid that it won't be easy if at all possible!

There are some products out-there that could help you keep your template in Word and fill them like http://www.aspose.com/categories/file-format-components/aspose.words-for-.net-and-java/default.aspx

Is it possible to have some other reporting tool where we can generate the templates directly from the formats specified by the user, instead of creating them manually.

Is there any tool that lets the user create .RPT files. This way user can create the templates in the same format and we just take the .RPT files and plug in the data.

Do you know if there are any tools available for free download that let us create crystal report templates. In this case user will not need the CR engine to run the reports.

Crystal uses a proprietary report file format.  I doubt there are any tools that would allow you to create a report templates.

I am not aware of any tool that let you import a Word template into CR. Even if that would exist, how would you connect the data?

Yes you are right, we have decided to let the user create report templates in crystal and give us the .RPT files

Do you know of any software that lets the user create the template and generate .RPT file without needing a CR engine
