VMWAre and Serial Port

I would like to add the serial port in VMWARE in windows xp. I have installed the lines of
serial0 there are five and then disabled the parralel port in the bios of that vm. Still I cannot communicate with the serial port.

What am I missing?

    Did you power down the XP guest OS, and add the Serial port through the VM's properties?

    You would need to get to its properties, ADD, Serial, connect to physical serial on host, and connect at power on.

    When I try to Add the use physical port on the host is greyed out.

    Make certain that the Serial port on the Server is active and usable. Make sure its not disabled in the Host OS Bios.  

    What version of VMware host are you using?

    I have ESXi 3.5

    Ah,  Physical Serial ports, just like USB, are not supported in esxi 3.5.
