NTBackup : Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
The backup is done to a USB drive on a network computer. THe error happens for both manual and scheduled backups. The backup is done with administrative rights using the Domain's Admin
Error message that appears after about 2 gigs out of 40 total on a file C:\...smipsdef64\20090113. 001\MetaDa ta.dat 6 minutes and 39 seconds into the backup is

Error reported. Unknown error.
There maybe a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.

any errors in windows event viewer - system log - on the network computer to which this USB is attached to?
if you run ntbackup on that network computer, can you write more than 2GB to this USB?

running backup on the "network" computer, computer that has the usb drive physically attached to came back with an error:

I also have Symanted Endpoint Protection on the same computer. could that be an issue.

The backup is done to an external USB hard dribe and both RPC and VSS services are set to automatic and they are started.

leads me to consider if shadow storage service is not active on the HD
yet vss is started in services.msc

list shadowstorage may work when you have VSS snapshots enabled on the drive and scheduled to take snapshots on a regular basis. may not exactly be for the backup snapshots we are troubleshooting.
may be you have already looked at this: but do you have all the latest VSS updates from Microsoft
