file system: NTFS
any errors in windows event viewer - system log - on the network computer to which this USB is attached to?

if you run ntbackup on that network computer, can you write more than 2GB to this USB?

raising point value.  The VSS has an application log error:

The backup is done to an external USB hard dribe and both RPC and VSS services are set to automatic and they are started.
for the VSS application log error, have a look at:

@ itprotocall.

running vssadmin list shadowstore on elevated command prompt return

No items found that satisfy the query.

leads me to consider if shadow storage service is not active on the HD
yet vss is started in services.msc
list shadowstorage may work when you have VSS snapshots enabled on the drive and scheduled to take snapshots on a regular basis. may not exactly be for the backup snapshots we are troubleshooting.

may be you have already looked at this: but do you have all the latest VSS updates from Microsoft
i came across quite a few towards end of 08.
