How to find Business Intelligence Development in Visual Studio 2005

I am trying to edit a .rdl report for CRM and the "Unleashed" book tells me I should use a Business Intelligence project type but when I open Visual Studios, the Business Development option is not there. I have VS installed on the SQL Server 2005 machine and have tried to reboot but the BID does not show up. I also tried reinstalling Integrated services on the Report server - nothing. I can see the report server running.

What do I need to check to find the BID in VS 2005?

if you have installed it full you should have "Business Intelligence Projects" under "New Project"

I did not install "Full" - should I uninstall and reinstall or is there a way to add the feature?

tigin44Commented:
you can run the set up and add the features by choosing modify intallation...

I can not modify or add this feature - all the features were checked in that section of the installation.  I will have to uninstall and then reinstall VS and try checking "Full" installation.

I uninstalled and reinstalled VS, installed the MSDN library and still no BID. I updated from the MS site, the only thing it did not do was install sp1 for VS.

What do I try next.

One other possible issue; I am testing this system with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it is out of the "Action Pack" from MS. Could this be causing the BIDS not to show up?

You need to install Business INtelligence Studio that comes with SQL Server (Not SQL Express)

In other words....the BIDS "Visual Studio" piece is BUNDLED with SQL SERVER Full Product, not the other way around....

jplanAuthor Commented:
Ok - understood.
I have the SQL 05 Standard Edition and according to Pedro's link (thanks) it has Development Studio built in.

How do I add this feature to SQL server that is already installed?

Install the CLIENT TOOLS which I believe are on the #2 Install CD under SETUP folder....

Just shooting from the hip here......

try the install file:   sqlrun_tools under the setup folder on CD 2.

be sure that all SQL programs are closed on your workstation when trying to load.....

Oh and be prepared...if I recall correctly,....I had a few problems getting it to load correctly....it didn't behave well....    : (

I found the setup.exe, it's in the same directory as sqlrun_tools. I'm assuming I can just run the setup.exe and the tools will be an option to install.

The files were under Disc 1 on my SQL DVD. If someone has the CD's they could be on Disc 2 as mentioned.

Are you saying if any program, like CRM, is using the SQL server - I need to wait till all users are not using it?

MIKESoftware Solutions ConsultantCommented:
They are under BOTH CD's...for some reason I remember CD #2 being the CD to use...but oh well...try either one.

You'll see what I mean about having issue.....I really doubt anyone has ever installed SQL SERVER withouth having "someking of issue.."    LOL

I need to run the sqlrun_tools.msi as you mentioned above.

I started to run it then cancled, but I did see where I could choose the BID and install it.
