VMWare ESXi on Dell servers, How to use RAID management without shutting down?

We are just about to begin converting our physical servers to VMWare ESXi, and i keep coming up with questions...

All of our servers, well not that many, just 4 of them. are PowerEdge 2850 and 2950.

We use the OpenManage management and it can manage the RAID in Windows without bringing the server down to enter the boot screen.

How do you do that in VMWare?  and How do you perform a BIOS / Firmware update in VMWare?

THE DELL SUU DVD / CD does not work under anything but Windows. Unlike HP has a all in one DVD that will boot itself and updates everything at once.

    Accepted Solution

You cannot normally control the RAID controller within VMWare ESXi.  If you purchase Virtual Center license and license your ESXi with VMotion you can setup a VMWare Cluster.  Once a cluster is setup you can move the virtual machines real time without downtime to a different ESX host.  This is normally done with shared storage and allows you to upgrade an ESX host one at a time without downtime

There may be a management agents for ESX (not sure for ESXi) from Dell (most likely) that will allow you to use openmanage. We normally use HP and Insight Manager has Insight agents specifically for ESX.  With ESXi there are new and improved snmp agents that allow you to monitor hardware within the ESX host.
