Link to file in CRM form?

I have found how to use an onload event to change a text field into a link to a folder, is there a way to link directly to a file? We would like to be able to link to PDF quotes and artwork files, all inside the network, using UNC or the network drive name.

One way to do this is to store the files in SharePoint (Windows SharePoint Services - WSS - comes free with WIndows Server 2003).  SharePoint assigns a URL to every file that is saved within it.  Unfortunately, I don't think you can link directly from a field to a file unless you store the files in a tool that assigns a URL to the file (such as SharePoint).

You can also put a file browser inside of an iframe on a CRM form - which can be used just like Windows Explorer.  You're not storing files in a field - but you can see all the files directly inside of CRM and open/close/edit/drag/drop just like using Windows Explorer.  I've been meaning to do a blog entry on this for a while - if you're interested, let me know and I'll try to make it a priority in the next few days.

Can that browser be linked only to a particular folder?

No - the folder the browser uses can be dependant upon the CRM entity.  We have it configured so that it automatically creates a folder for each Account, and a sub-folder for each Opportunity.  But it can be configured however you wish.

WilyGuy, no correct answer would be the correct closing at this time. I was waiting for crm-info to post the blog he was writing about a solution for this.

My apologies.  I did post this to www.askcrm.Com a few months ago but forgot to load the link here.  You should be able to find it there.
