I am running SQL Server 2005 std x64. Is it possible to mirror to a SQL Express 2005 instance?

Alternatively, what would be th best way to backup my data if I cannot mirror to SQL Express.

Am I able to do a complete database backup to a networked drive? or does it have to be local?

I do not believe SQL Express can be configured as a mirror.   SQL Server has a robust, built in backup command and supports management plans for scheduling backup scenarios.  If using the Full logging model, don't forget to backup the logs, as well.   Backing up to a network drive is fine.
