What's the risk of migration from IDS to IPS?

Hi experts,

I'd just like to know generally the risk of migrating from IDS to IPS.

Thank you!

In theory IDS [Intrusion Detection Systsem] is only capable of detecting the attacks and alerting, whereas, IPS [Intrusion Prevention Systsem] in addtion should also take an action [as configured] to thwart the attack.

Depending on the product you currently are and the product you move on to based on the capabilities the risk would vary; in general the risk should be minimal.

I would suggest you to put IPS in sniffer mode on the network and see how it behaves; compare the behavior with your existing IDS system. This exercise would give a fair amount of idea about the pros and cons of the new solution and you would be able to mitigate the shortcomings.

Thank you.

Good idea, dpk wal. As you suggested I'll "put IPS in sniffer mode on the network and see how it behaves". Thank you for your time and solution.
