DEll Poweredge 2850 E0212

Hi ,
I have a problem with my server. I am getting an amber light and it has the error code E0212.
It seems to be a backplane issue, but I am not sure.
1-does anyone has any suggestions on how to fix that.
2-I have another server 2950 ( brand new, never used) if I take the hard drive and put it in the new one , would everything turn on fine?
thanks
David

It seems to be the same , so now I have to find the battery , but I cannot even boot into the server to clear the error. do you have any suggestions?

lnkevinCommented:
The error code has nothing to do with hard drive. Normally, when you see that error, you may just have some issue with the following hardware: Power supplies, memory, fans or motherboard...
Check on the back of your server to make sure the Power supplies are OK. Open the box and see if all fans are running. Otherwise, resit your memory.

I removed the memory , the fans and the power supply and resit everything , and still the same thing. how can I reset the error, I don't even see the boot propmt. the power doesn't even turn my hard drives. it's really annoying if the problem is coming from a battery . it should at least let me boot into the server , no?

1- E0212 is a voltage error, the rest of the error will usually point out the culprit, if possible post the entire error that's scrolling across the LCD.
2- Depends, what OS are you using? Are you using raid?

tavernyAuthor Commented:
it says "E0212 volt PG 3.3V"

my OS is Windows 2003 and yes I am using a RAID with 3 harddrives

Does the system have redundant power supplies and is it still under warranty?

yes I have redundant power supplies and no the warranty is over

Are there any red lights on, on the back of the power supply?
0

tavernyAuthor Commented:
no red light , only the amber light in the back of the server and in the front of the server. when I press the power button everything seems to turn on but the hard drive ar not spinning. and the monitor doesn't turn on.

Do you have dual cpu's installed?

tavernyAuthor Commented:
yes

Also try it with only 1 power supply at a time.

tavernyAuthor Commented:
I did that no luck

Call Dell to replace your motherboard. There is no chance that both power supply are dead. Should be motherboard issue rather than battery...

ok, I will do that . in the meantime ,  I need to get my data into a new server. I have the poweredge 2950. can put my drives into this one ?? and have the server boot fine?

There isn't specific diagnoses for this error as it isn't in Dells documentation.  The PG can be referring to couple of things. The Power good signal failing which would be either a bad psu(not the case) or bad power distribution(motherboard). Dell also refers to PG as Power Grid on a couple of systems and usually a failure points to a bad VRM(motherboard or cpu).

If you want to move these drives to another system it's possible but does have risks(data loss). What raid controller is in the 2850? 2950? If the 2950's raid controller is able to pickup the 2850's array you will still most likely need to do a repair install of 2003.

lnkevinCommented:
You can try to do that with no harm. However, if you receive a blue screen, turn off the server and take the drives out. Since these servers are not the same model, chance to have the drives plug and play is not big. If you would like to use those drive on the new server permanently, you just have to install the scsi controller driver on the OS. The only way to get around is repair install with F5 (for drivers) option.

on the 2850 it's a PERC 4 and my 2950 it's a PERC 6

tavernyAuthor Commented:
well it's not gonna work , the type of drive are not the same SCSI and the other one is SATA

If you would like to try the drives on the new server, make sure you keep them in order. If it does not work, put the drives back in the position where they were. Do not mix the order!

I really don't have any luck . how can I get the data out. I can recreate the domain on the other one, I don;'t have so many users. I's pretty much a file server.

OK. Then don't try it.

If I can get access to my data ,I should be fine.
Any idea?

jamietonerCommented:
If you have another system that supports scsi you can use raid reconstructor.

How long does it take to get the MB replace by Dell tech? You can always experdite your case ask them how you can experdite it. I don't suggest to rebuild raid on a different server. Your issue is just a HW failure. Don't make it to be a data failure!

I didn't call DELL yet , I am gonna call them now to see how much is it and how long would it take.
0

lnkevinCommented:
If your server is under warranty, it should not cost you anything for the MB. The only matter is timing. Pay them extra to get ahead if you can.

If you buy a motherboard get a backplane and riser with it as all 3 should be replaced together.

tavernyAuthor Commented:
Just talk to DELL they want $850 to replace the motherboard in about 3 days and $1000 more for today or tomorrow, it's ridiculous. I am gonna try to get the motherboard from somewhere else.

In the meantime , I will configure the new  server. my only concern is how can I grab the data from my hard drives.. If I buy those external hardrive connector , do you think I can transfer the files. I don't care about the windows config , I just want the pictures and doc files.

tavernyAuthor Commented:
thanks for the link , I am gonna try to see if they can ship it overnight

jamietonerCommented:
I would go for the first one ($435) it already has dual procs, and the raid controller all you'd have to do is swap the drives over.

jamietonerCommented:
Going for an external scsi to usb or firewire($110 each and you'd need 3) plus recovery software would cost more than that server on ebay.

tavernyAuthor Commented:
I see , I will try to get that now.
Thanks

the sellers don't respond to my email, would this work?

jamietonerCommented:
Possible, but without being a 100% sure it's the motherboard, a known working warrantied system would be the best option for a speedy recovery. Give them a bit to respond or look for another, there an many working 2850's available on ebay.

I have another question, I have another server 2850 running at another location. if I go there with my harddrives plug them in could I mess up anything?
Since I don't quite get how Raid /PERC works does it take the serial of the hardrive and configure them ?
basiclally I just want to plug thse drive , grab the files and then put back the old drives. but I don't want to mess everything there.

jamietonerCommented:
It should work ok, but again there is a possibility it could go wrong so make sure you take a backup before the attempt. Make sure to put the drives back in the exact slot they came out of, the controller supports drive roaming but I wouldn't trust it. Know the exact raid config and settings incase it hits the fan and we need to try and recover an array. Swap the drives while the system is off and if the controller asks during post load the config from the drives not nvram.

tavernyAuthor Commented:
ok , I am gonna go now to the location to swap the drive , what config do I need from the array?
0

jamietonerCommented:
Mainly just what type and how many(incase there are multiple arrays on the same drives).

In few minutes I will be done with the backup of the working server.
this is the infor I gather:
It's a Raid 5 , 136.48GB
Windows Disk 0 Strip Size 64kb

I will do the swap and hoppefully it will work fine. I keep you posted

How'd it go?

tavernyAuthor Commented:
Hi Jamie,

well it went very well, I was able to swap the drive boot into the server grab all what I wanted and then I had to recreate the domain in my new server. Let's put it this way , I didn't sleep the whole night just to have something operational today .
I am right now reinstalling the printer and everything is up and running.
I am still gonna order the motherboard and try to fix the one I have.
Thank you so much for your help.
