Batch remove items from Start menu

I'd like to create batch files to automate certain support functions for desktop - eg - restart printer spooler, release renew IP etc. All works except it leaves the program listed on the start menu...

If there anyway to automatically delete an item from the list

C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Start Menu appears to list everything under All Programs and not items on the start menu list.

Hope this is clear enough :-)

Right-click the start button and select "Explore all users". What icons are you trying to get rid of???

You can use XP's Local Group policy to change the start menu. You could write a .reg to do it. See this MS article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292504

Quick Procmon on my Vista Ult machine showed that everytime I removed an entry form my recently used apps, deleted a reg vlaue here.....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count

GUID might be different. I deleted all mine, the menu was still populated though.....Might play with it on your XP machines....

Just to confirm

I want for a user to run a script from Start all Programs\ IT support\Clear IE Temp Files.bat
This then does that ever its set to but XP then leaves an Icon in the root of the start menu for this batch script.
I'd like to know how to include in the script to automatically delete this new icon after every run

To try and work this out i cleared all items there by right clicking and selecting "remove from List"
I then ran notepad so it would leave the icon there.
Cannot find this entry anywhere in the registry or local files...

Thanks for the sugestions so far! :)

csl002: if i explore it takes me to C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Start Menu.

John6767: this maybe it but makes nooooooo sense what so ever :-)

OK. Just confirmed it on my XP Machine.... That is the right spot, but all those values are encoded ROT13...

This is not going to be the answer, but I think it confirms that you arent going to be able to do this programmatically, to remove a single shortcut that IT launches....

Maybe disabling the feature, and then re enabling it might allow the Pinned items to remain. That can probably be done via registry.....
