printer server spool service

Hello,

I have a situation all long the day with the users who want to print documents on the shared printers.

We have a one XP machine which apparently have got all the printers installed and shared.

Most of the day, they had the "printer spool not running on the server " error

Every time I had to reboot the XP machine to get back to normal.

Please can someone advise as to why this could be happening?

Thanks for your help

Regards

Most likely a dodgy driver is causing the print spooler to crash.

You can manually start the Print Spooler by running:  net start spooler

Yes, starting the print spooler using "NET START SPOOLER" from the command line or run window would start the spooler, but I agree it's probably a bad driver. Download the latest drivers for all of your printers and delete, reinstall printers with new drivers to see if that fixes it permanently.

Do the following and try. (This requires admin rights to the user who is doing this)

Delete all the printers on the system.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers and rename the folder w32x86 to w32x86.old
Now restart the system, and readd printers one by one. This would resolve the issue (as i had the same problem)

Also try providing admin rights to the user and have a check

If no luck, try running System File Check, go to Start > Run > type 'sfc /scannow'

Then also this doesnt gets resolved, Repair the OS....

PS:  Make sure your printer driver is up-to-date

You can set the print driver to restart itself after a crash:

Click Start > Run
Type "services.msc"
Click OK
Right-click on "Print Spooler" from the list of services
Click the Recovery tab

From here you can tell the Print Spooler how to behave if the server crashes.  For example you can tell the Print Spooler to automatically restart on subsequent failures.

Be aware that the Print Spooler should not crash.  First check the drivers.  Then try and establish what is making it crash - is it when a particular printer is used?  By a particular user?  While printing a document of a particular type? etc...

To quote from the link given below:

If the Print Spooler service fails when printing, when Windows starts or it can not be restarted, the usual reason is that one or more printer drivers is defective.

This page has some very good advice on how to clean up installed printer drivers so that you can reinstall the printer and hopefully correct your problem:

Before running of deleting printers, files etc I would suggest to take a look at a few registry keys, because this sounds exacly like a problem I have been seeing many times and it relates to the drivers on the print server, but it will only crash on clients and Terminal servers. please take a look at this EE question I provided a solution to http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Peripherals/Printers_Scanners/Q_24095039.html.
If you get a crash dump file as described in the question link above I can take a quick look at it directly to see whats probably causing it and post the response here.
I do agree with the experts above that its related to faulting driver, more exacly its maybe not the driver itself but print processor, print monitor or misconfigured driver/print queue that is the problem. of course if you are using old drivers that is a problem becase those could be affected of security patches or fixes in windows.

I dont have all the drivers handy, I remember I have once downloaded them from Konica/Kyocera websites

i have setup the server and have installed all the printers, one of the printer which is on ethernet (tcp/ip port) is working fine on all the users computers but those on USB port giving problems...

when i add the printer on the users pc, its getting added and working fine but when i reboot the users pc its loosing the connection to the network ... i am getting 2 unique errors here

1) unable to connect to the printer, access is denied

Can you provide everyone access to the printer and have a check. Also, are you trying this on only one PC or all the PC's are having the same problem?

No thats what my other question was... is this happening on all the Systems or only one system is having that issue?

1 system has access denied issue ... and other 5 machines have "cannot view printer property...spooler service not running" error upon restarting the PC

Dhiraj MuthaCommented:
First check the other systems, provide admin rights to the user on the system and have a check. You can also try the below steps on these systems.

Delete all the printers on the system.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers and rename the folder w32x86 to w32x86.old
Now restart the system, and readd printers one by one. This would resolve the issue (as i had the same problem)

hello osglb

I have checked this on every users machine and noticed that this is happening on every PC.

I mean, the status says "Access denied, unable to connect" and when I double click on the printer it says "Printer properties
cannot be displayed.Operation Could not be completed"

I will follow your suggestion above, meanwhile if you think any other info might help, please let me know.

Thanks

Dhiraj MuthaCommented:
Try running sfc /scannow on those systems. If it doesnt works i will suggest you to repair the PC. Or you can try one more thing, login with the same ID of those for whom its working on the non working system and then have a check.

thanks for your suggestions, most of the PCs are now working OK with the network printers. Howerver, couple more PCs are still having access denied problems... I think I can live with it for now...

thanks
