What do you mean "maintaining connectivity to a server". Is this a remote server throught a VPN, on the same site, etc? If you are on the same network as the server, you shouldn't loose connectivity unless you are wireless and lose the signal or have some other network problem.

This is a remote server through a VPN

If you are using a VPN client to connect, then that would probably work. There is probably a inactivity timeout on the VPN client so that after a certain period, it disconnects.
