Backup Server 2008 virtual machine to network drive

I need a solution for network backup of a virtual server 2008 that will make archive copies to network drive.  Currently I have it setup in task manager to run a .bat file to backup using the command line for "Backup Once".  The problem with that is it overwrites the previous backup.

Here is what I have tried...

I have mapped the network share to the machine, but it will not backup to it since it will only backup to a "Physically" installed drive.

I would prefer to not use 3rd party applications to trick the OS to think the network drive is a local drive, but this might be my only option.

Just create a second batch file to save the backup to a different folder and a second scheduled job to run on different days.

repeat for as many different backups you would like (2-7 should do the trick to have 7 days of backups).

    Does that help?

Unfortunately, I don't have unlimited hard drive space or that would be doable.

    Thanks for the quick response

I don't have my 2008 server up and running at the moment - but can you backup to USB Drives?

I havn't had problems running NTbackups to a network drive in 2003... I'll have to look into this.

Well...Microsoft added some features, and removed some in SBS 2008.  One of the functions removed was the ability to backup to a network drive using Backup Schedule.  According to Microsoft the drive has to be physically located in or connected to the machine.  Also, the server I am backing up to is at our remote facility so I really don't want to drive 4 hours to attach a USB Drive.

**Please Note:  The Backup Once feature works fine.  It is the Backup Schedule that I need to get setup so I can backup to network drive.

Well we ended up adding another "internal" hard drive to the virtual server.  So this solved the issue.  I was hoping someone knew how to get around the no scheduled backups to network drives in Server 2008.

    Thanks for the input.
