It has been noted with a client  with an iMac and an XP laptop that some documents PDF's are printing acceptably fast and others are excruciatingly slow, as ifthey are being printedas high quality graphics.  This happens with both Mac OS Leopard and XP and an Officejet L6580.  This happens either directly using a USB connection or through an Airport wireless router.

Any ideas as to how to control this?

Watch Question

I believe I had similar problems at  my last workplace.  I deemed the problems were related to: (1) high quality images inside the pdf (which are easy to spot because the file is really big) and (2) images that don't fit inside the page borders properly (like stretching off into the side).  The page border problem absolutely killed me as our printers would stall for up to an hour sometimes.  There was no way to fix the speed of the printer, as the printer simply didn't like the layout of the pdf.  So in the end I just did it overnight and asked them not to use that pdf again.

Hi theras2000,

Thanks for the note. However, i neglected to say that i was dismayed when plain word documents printed like snail trails, which should print quickly.  It's really perplexing....

Thanks again.

So it's always the same documents?  Try copying the text out of those documents and putting them into fresh ones.  I assume the problem is in hidden formatting variables that you can't really see, so in Word try changing all the formatyting stuff too.  Highlight the whole document text (ctrl+a) and then format the paragraph and text and page borders and printing defauults and such.  Hopefully you'll figure out a pattern.
My problems (Word and pdf docs) were usually to do with file's we'd received from other companies where for some reason they felt they had to do things like specify printing Tray 2 specifically for 1 page in the middle of the document, or change 1 page to landscape, or alter the printing border or a page.  Sheesh!
Try using postscript drivers if your not already.

There was no conclusive answer for this problem.  HP's Mac dept couldn;t even come up with anything but reinstalling the software.  Thanks for the ideas all.
