How can i restrict printing by pc's. we have an IT room with a printer and i would like to allow printing to that printer for only the Pc's in that room, no others on the domain.

I have a 2003 domain, the printers are networked.

Many Thanks

Hi,

If you open up the printer properties on the server it is installed and select the Security Tab, you can specify people or groups that can print to that machine. Not exactly what you asked for but provides the same effect?

Hope this helps

Thank you but, the problem with that is the user permission overrides the computer permission! (atleast that is my understanding form tests i have done)

You can also add PC objects into the security DACL, therefore restricting printing. Remember to remove the user permissions though.

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

Network printers (that is, printers that are shared by a print server) are *user* specific. Unless you're restricting network traffic to inside the room, a user that has the permission to access this printer can do this from anywhere. Adding *machine* accounts to the security settings of a printer has absolutely no impact on that.
If the printer itself has a network interface, you can install it as a local printer on the clients and print directly to it, instead of using the print server. Local printers are tied to the machine.

Thank you very much. I have also found a firewall on the printer that allows or restricts by IP.
