routers

i have a cisco 837 router, which is supposed to have in its flash the relevant files to operate SDM, but there not in there.  does anyone no where I can get the relevant files so I can use sdm or another means of using this same cisco 837 router?

Check you IOS version is:
"12.2(13)ZH or later
"12.3(2)XA or later
"12.3(2)T or later

As long as you meet the above requirement, the link above will walk you through re-installing SDM in Task 4.

hi MrJemson:

ive found a site through your url, but it only shows 2600 & 3600 routers, sdm IP software, these routers though I do have also.  according to site  I havent got the relevant type account, when I click on the url.

I can find releases and other stuff.  not forgetting 837 no longer supported according to site aswell. when I do a show flash there is supposed to be an ios file and additional files, but i have no additional files so it is not on the cisco 837.

so as it stands after doing some searches im going round in circles and cant find what I want.  Ideally I probably need an updated version of IOS and the SDM program!!

ive configured both below, but cant now ping.  My firewall is off.

When I enter the name of the router ie "michael", it says that http/https is disabled, and may also need an IP address & port activated to enable this ie; 10.10.10.1 80, although when doing a "sh run" it says "ip http server", so im assuming this means its enabled as per other experts advice, with regards to just "ip http server" in the running config.

- desktop pc: 10.10.10.2 sm: 255.255.255.248 - crossover cable in router eth0 port
- router name: michael & Router Eth0 port ip: 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.248

- erase-startup-config - enter
- reload
- michael#config t
- username cisco privilege 15 secret 0 cisco - (cisco can only be used once and if still does not work, I will change the username & password to something else)

step 1
- ip http server
or
- michael(config)# ip http secure-server
- michael(config)# ip http authentication local

Step 2 Create a user account with privilege level 15 (enable privileges).
- michael(config)# username cisco privilege 15 password 0 cisco

Step 3 Configure SSH and Telnet for local login and privilege level 15:

michael(config)# line vty 0 4
michael(config-line)# privilege level 15
michael(config-line)# login local
michael(config-line)# transport input telnet
michael(config-line)# transport input telnet ssh
Router(config-line)# exit

Step 4 (Optional) Enable local logging to support the log monitoring function:
- michael(config)# logging buffered 51200 warning

Enter the IP address of the router in the SDM installation utility rather than the hostname.

Hi Jemson:

I dont understand your comment.  Although ive removed the hostname.  When trying to call up the SDM to continue install I always type the IP Address.

mikey250Author Commented:
this part which Ive added above should have been removed as this was not done.  this was what I tried weeks ago, but was told all I needed to do was enter: ip http server and that was it.

Where are you entering hostname??
This is where I was referring you to enter the IP Address...

mikey250Author Commented:
i had cut & paste that partial message I sent you by accident as this was a couple of weeks old.  the router has not been named.  looking through instructions for SDM there are more than one way to get SDM up & running, whether it be the correct cisco router using dhcp or not and whether you use the browser to type in the ip address to bring sdm first page up or installing on my pc where it did say sometime today that http might be disabled when it wasnt.

since I never had any sdm files on the cisco sdm i installed sdm onto my pc and everything is pingable ie to my pc and router and vice versa, but during install it gives options to install either to:

- router by itself
- to pc only
- or to both pc and router

ive been selecting to my pc everytime and I stopped my firewall and rebooted and made sure firewall was off either way even after waiting 10 mins only the first initial sdm page came up and it said that another would follow ie the actual sdm to change configs etc.

so i decided to install both on pc and router at the same time and for some reason it has worked.  the only thing is it would only allow me to install sdm express and not the other main sdm because insufficient memory.  Ive had a look through the express and its pretty straight forward. although I had no interfaces attached so the firewall option would not open.

why it never worked the other way round I dont know and although my firewall was off maybe something was stopping it either way?

MrJemsonCommented:
If you followed the guide in the link I posted, it said to select install on router.
Thats where you were going wrong.
You needed to install on the router not the PC.

The PC version only connects to the router version, but you can use a web browser to connect to it anyway.

Glad it is sorted for you now anyway.

thats what I tried to do originally, copy files to router as per those instructions but it wouldnt happen.  saying that there was insufficient memory to install sdm although it allowed me to install sdm express, I wonder if this could be the reason?

so I ended up installing on pc.

Im gona have to try and see if I can get some memory for the cisco 837 because I want a proper look at the proper sdm!!

saying that I have a 2600 & 3600 & 2500 routers, from what I was told it should install on both 2600 & 3600.  These are the ios's ive got, will sdm install on them, because when I tried to look through the cisco navigator I could not find no mention of sdm anywhere?

also when I followed the instructions for installing the files onto the router, it lead me to a link that shows .zip files, but because I only hold a basic cco account I was not able to download it.  so I was forced to install on my pc in the end, from what I could see.

And dependant on which type of router your on it shows in that link you sent that in some cases it is either a: straight-thru or x-over cable.

much appreciated for you help though!!

MrJemsonCommented:
If you install a bigger Flash in your router you would be able to use SDM rather and SDM express, but be warned upgrading the Flash is no walk in the park!!

Most SOHO routers are shipped with SDM Express ratehr than full blown SDM anyway, so I would just stick with SDM Express.
0

mikey250Author Commented:
Oh yeh I forgot about that, there is more configuration involved rather than just replacing the flash, is this correct?  I will probably leave it then.

is this actual express the exact same layout as the main sdm?

can you tell me if my other message regarding the ios's I have installed with allow me to look at SDM there instead, the memory has been increased on all other routers as well?
0

MrJemsonCommented:
Yes you can use full SDM from your computer.

mikey250Author Commented:
although you say I can use the full sdm on my pc, when I double-clicked the sdm icon it opened up the first initial sdm page and said that another will follow, presumably the main sdm, but nothing ever did open.
